The past year has been tough on everyone. I feel like being stuck at home has thrown all of our routines out of whack and some of the typically most motivated and hard-working people have lost their footing, I included.
Since the clock struck midnight, alerting us of a new year, I’ve had to push really, really hard just to get some of the simplest things accomplished. For me, my mental health has taken a hit. Our days have been so different that almost each day has consisted of me throwing routine out the window and just putting myself into an almost permanent survival mode.
Sound familiar?
Through all of these challenges, we start to pick up bad habits along the way and because this is something that has become the common ground for most of us, it was important to me to write something that you can all tangibly use to navigate our new normal and break free from those bad habits.

10 Bad Habits That Are Holding You Back
Your bad habits might be different than mine, so I’m going to keep things general, but also share my real-life, from the heart experiences. We’re all human. We can all use these bad habits as learning experiences to push onward and become the best versions of ourselves in 2021.
Bad Habit #1: You’re comparing yourself to others.
I do way too much of this, so I knew that it needed to be on this list. The comparison game is real and it is definitely a trigger that holds us back. And ya know what? We’re all guilty of it from time to time. My only advice for this one is to put your damn blinders on, girlfriend. It’s the only way to push through and will help you step outside your comfort zone and just do it.
Bad Habit #2: You are disorganized.
I have a lot of flaws, I will admit that, but being disorganized is not one of them. I’ve actually been obsessively organized my whole life and I feel like it’s one of those key things that helps me succeed with my business. If you are all over the place, there is no way that you’re going to push through and reach your biggest goals. You have to find a way to establish a routine that you can stick with and a way to keep your thoughts and plans organized.

Bad Habit #3: You’re too busy putting yourself down.
I feel like this sort of goes hand in hand with bad habit #1 because whenever one pays the “compare game” they typically end up putting themselves down. Sound familiar? My solution to this is that whenever I’m feeling this way, I give myself a day to just wade through the negative emotions. Wallow in it all you want, but all you get is that one day. Then, you have to put your big girl pants on, pick yourself up and get back to work.
Bad Habit #4: You need someone to hold your hand.
Sometimes, you just need some guidance so that you can push through a block and keep moving towards your goals instead of away from them. THIS is exactly why I started business coaching this year! Check out my course here for getting your business off the ground or feel free to email me (allison@projectmotherhoodnyc.com) to book some one on one coaching session. I have some amazing success stories and promise I can help you, too!
Bad Habit #5: You are neglecting your health.
There is no way that you can do your best if you don’t feel your best. It’s just a simple fact. Personally, I’ve taken my health goals to the Internet. You guessed it: check out my weight loss journey right here. While health is something that’s always in the forefront of my mind, sometimes you need to re-evaluate in order to push through a block, and that’s okay.
Bad Habit #6: You’re putting blame on others.
I do this one a lot, too, and being a mom, a lot of this blame goes to the kids. There is always, always going to be people around that are easy scapegoats to place blame on for why we can’t our shit together. And that’s not fair to anyone. I know that whenever I stop placing blame on the kiddos for distracting me it creates space and time for me to actually do whatever it is that my heart is calling for me to be doing.

Bad Habit #7: You haven’t defined your goals.
I write a lot about goal setting because it’s something that’s really important to me and I deeply feel like every mom out there can do whatever the heck she puts her mind to. But, you have to know what you want. Close your eyes and picture what your biggest dream is. Once you figure that out, then you’re able to break that down into smaller goals that will become your roadmap to success.

Bad Habit #8: You are extremely distracted.
Distractions are easy to come by these days, especially with kids home from school. The way that I conquer this issue is to know when I am at my most productive points during the day and work then. It’s the only thing that helps!
Bad Habit #9: You are spending too much time on social media.
And of course, social media is a HUGE distraction. If you feel like social media is consuming you, I recommend doing a full social media detox (I teach you how to do that here) and apply what you learn to help you in real life.
Bad Habit #10: You are saying “yes” more than you’re saying “no.”
Saying yes to everything that everyone asks you to help them with will pull you in a million different directions and instead of helping yourself get from point A to point B, you will be scattered all over in between. Stop saying “yes” to everyone else and start saying “yes” to you!
