10 Tips For Waking Up Happy And Energized
I’m writing these words today in my office at 5am. While to some that may sound painful, I’m as happy as a clam (whatever that really means) typing away in silence with a cup of coffee the size of my head. In fact, I get so excited about waking up and taking on the day that I even start to stir and wake up well before my alarm. This is my happy time in my happy place and surprisingly also the time whenever I’m the most energized to actually get things done. It might sound nuts, but you too, can wake up happy and energized each day.
Being busy parents with work and schedules and households to run, we all know that every day is different. By that I mean that you can have a routine that seems so perfect and works for a few days, only to be thrown off course by a morning that makes you crawl back in bed as soon as the kids leave for school. I get it. And I’ve been there. I always say how much I thrive when it comes to routine and believe that everyone can get into that mode, too, but sometimes you just need practical strategies for waking up happy and feeling energized in the morning. Here’s how I make that happen and hope these tips work for you, too!
1. Set the devices aside at least 30 minutes before bedtime.
I love social media just as much as the next guy and often find myself scrolling, scrolling, scrolling in bed at night when I shouldn’t be. Do yourself a favor and turn off the lights, even if you’re watching tv, and set the phone aside at least 30 minutes before you plan on calling it a night. This will help you get better sleep and wake up much more refreshed.
2. Allow yourself one hit of the snooze button, then get out of the bed for the day.
Once is all you get, then it’s go time!
3. . Keep a glass of water at your bedside.
Hydration is key. Seriously. I hydrate so much in the morning that I pee about 6 times before I leave for our 9am run. Make sure you have a big glass of water by your bedside every night. Drink some before bed and chug the rest when you wake up in the morning. Before coffee. Before tea. Just do it because hydration will help give you the push to get through busy mornings.
4. Have a hot beverage in the morning that you look forward to.
Whether you love coffee or tea or something else, make it a ritual and enjoy that cup each morning. Whenever we have things that we look forward to right at the start of each day it brings on joy plus makes getting out of bed much easier.
5. Think about the things you are most grateful for.
Whenever I’m doing #4 each morning, I start replaying through my mind all of the things that I am so grateful for in my life. These will obviously be so different for each and every one of us, but doing this every morning really puts things into perspective.
6. Two words: healthy food.
No matter how amazing a gooey cinnamon bun might taste in the morning, you will always feel it after you eat it. I’m no angel and love my sweets, believe me, but starting my day with something not only delish but nourishing, too, makes my belly happy and my body energized. My favorite lately has been a homemade smoothie with a Health Warrior chia seed bar.
The flavor options are endless, but I’ve been really digging coconut lately. Each bar is made with real, plant based ingredients that fill you up without weighing you down. Plus, they’re dairy free, gluten free, soy free, and non-GMO. And if you walk all over our house you will find them tucked everywhere from my office to my bedside table to the jogging stroller.
7. Get moving!
I start moving immediately in the morning and instead of making me tired, it wakes me up. Seriously. And I’m not talking about a full workout here (but see #9!), I just mean moving your body around the house. Getting the kids up and packing lunches totally counts, too. In fact, I walk up and down the steps extra times in the morning just to get myself going. I promise that it helps!
8. Plan for down time.
I started napping each day whenever Blake naps and it is glorious. It also gives me some down time to look forward each day so that I can really give my mornings my all and push myself hard. And I don’t know about you, but holy cow a good nap makes me happy.
9. Always plan for some sort of a workout and stick to it.
I feel like there are just no excuses not to get some sort of a workout in at least 3 days a week (I even have a whole guide for how to fit one in everyday here). If I’m able to run 5-6 days a week with a toddler, a jogging stroller and a dog – you can do it, too! I always start out with a workout on Monday and then the rest of the week depends on my schedule and the weather but making a plan and knowing that no matter what I’m following through holds me accountable and does wonders for your energy.
10. Get dressed.
For some, this might be an obvious one. But for so long, being a WAHM, it was not to me. I recently started making sure that I got dressed in something that wasn’t pajamas or yoga pants at least 3 days a week and it made me feel empowered in a way. I know that might sound silly, but dressing up and feeling pulled together runs an energy through me that is real and impactful in my daily life and I think that it’s worth noting to you all, too.
