20 Free Ways to Spread Acts of Kindness This Holiday Season
I always donate to a few charities we love throughout the year, but let’s face it – money gets tight with all the holiday shopping during December. Even though we’re choosing experiences over gifts, for the most part, this season, there are still gifts to be bought. However, kindness doesn’t cost anything.
Back in November, we were driving through the Starbucks drive through and the person in front of our car paid for my drink so I passed it on to the car behind us. Then a few days later, we went on a big Target trip with my sister and picked up a mixture of toys and toiletries to fill charity boxes that were sent all over the world to kids of all ages. While these gestures did cost money, it got me thinking how important it is for us to instill this message of kindness in our little ones as they grow. So, I’ve put together a list of 10 completely FREE ways for us all to spread kindness, but especially our little ones. I’m sharing this today in partnership with my friends at Health Warrior, who know that being kind is part of a healthy lifestyle.
Spreading kindness
Over the years I’ve learned that positive reinforcement goes a long way with our children. Don’t get me wrong: I can be a yeller mom (even though I’m trying to fix that). However, there really is something that compares to seeing that look on their faces whenever Chris or I share how proud we are of them whenever they did something good. They just radiate confidence. I want them to feel those things all the time. I also want them to feel good about helping others, and it honestly takes little to no effort in so many cases to spread kindness. I think it’s especially important during the holiday season, too, because you never know what people are going through.
20 Free Ways to Spread Acts of Kindness
In all honesty, there are SO many ways to spread kindness for free in addition to these. But if there is one thing that you walk away with after reading this post, it’s this: being kind costs nothing. And if you would like to print out this list and hang it on your refrigerator, I’ve created a FREE printable for you right here!
- Bring in your neighbor’s garbage cans.
- Help your neighbor shovel their snow.
- Offer to babysit so a mom pal and her husband can have a date night!
- Volunteer at a local nursing home.
- Write a handwritten note to someone you’ve been out of touch with.
- Give out compliments.
- Return a stranger’s shopping cart for them at the grocery store.
- Give someone you love a hug for no reason other than because you love them.
- Say “happy holidays” to strangers.
- Sit next to someone who is sitting alone.
- Introduce yourself to someone new at work (or have your kids introduce themselves to someone new at school).
- Offer to run errands for someone not able to.
- Smile at everyone you see.
- Offer to take a family photo for another family when you’re out.
- Help a mom with her stroller (or ahem…getting it up and down subways steps).
- Forgive someone you’ve been holding a grudge against.
- Say nice things to yourself each morning (hello…self care).
- Stop gossiping, and even be the one to shift the negative conversation.
- Put away your phone and be present with everyone you meet and see.
- Stay positive on social media.

And of course, while we’re out spreading kindness and holiday cheer, we always have our Health Warrior chia seed bars handy! They come in SO many yummy flavors (my favorite is the Banana Nut and Branden is currently loving the Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough!) that you just might not even realize that you are fueling your body with superfoods. The bars are only 100 calories each and make a great snack or breakfast on the go (I also throw them in Branden’s lunch box!). Made with real, plant-based ingredients and only 3 grams of sugar, you know your family is being well taken care of. Happy holidays friends!
XOXO,
Allison
