I am coming to you all today with this information as an adult who is suffering with acne. It’s not cute. It’s not really fun to talk about. But, I figured that I’m not the only one dealing with it, so why not share some things I’ve recently learned that are the root of my problems? It’s always my goal to help you all.
I have dealt with acne pretty much since my teenage years and it recently, really oddly started getting bad again into adulthood. In high school, it wasn’t horrible, but I was self conscious enough to go on Accutane, an oral prescription drug that is so intense you have to sign a waver promising not to get pregnant while taking it and still go for monthly pregnancy tests while on it. I had things pretty under control for quite some time, and then it started up again during the time we started buying our home in June, The stress must have really gotten to me because it started so fiercely and hasn’t let up.
So what changed?
First, I became a Beautycounter consultant and started experimenting with different regimens and really digging deep to research different skin types for my clients. Along the way, I learned an awful lot about my own skin.
5 Reasons You Have Adult Acne
After everything I’ve gone through in my adult years and all the research I’ve done on skin types and different products and regiments, here’s what I’ve narrowed it down to:
- You are treating the wrong skin type.
I spent most of my life, literally up until last month thinking that I had oily skin. News flash: I DO NOT. I actually have combo skin and have been treating the wrong skin type my entire life which has greatly contribute to my adult acne. For instance, I realized that instead of using a daily, all over acne treatment, I really just needed a spot treatment do that I didn’t dry our areas that actually needed moisture.

2. You are afraid of oil.
Again, I spent a huge chunk of my life with a pack of oil blotting cloths by my side, not realizing I was doing more harm than good. Repeat after me: I will NOT be afraid of oil. Our skin needs moisture, lots of it, and whenever we strip it of that, it will start to over-produce to make up for what it’s lost (enter those oil blotting papers and it’s just a big, bad cycle of pimples). Add this Balancing Facial Oil No. 3 to your routine and you will notice a HUGE difference.
3. You need a different treatment in the morning than you do at night.
So many of us start with a skincare routine and that’s all we use. And we get used to it. And so does our skin. I’ve noticed that for my combination skin that I needed to incorporate two completely different routine in the morning than in the night. In the morning, I use all of my acne treatments, which is the full CounterControl Regimen. (During the winter though, I swap the cleanser for the Countertime Oil Cleanser) Then, in the evening I use the notorious Lotus Cleansing Balm to wash, alternate between the Overnight Resurfacing Peel and the Mask (see below) as my treatment, then use the Countertime Soft Cream to moisturize.

4. You have dry skin acne (yes, it’s a thing).
I never knew that dry skin acne was a real thing until recently, but this is me 100% and I have a feel that it’s so many adults everywhere, and we’ve been lead to believe things about our skin that are untrue. So here we are, trying to fix the problem. Dry skin acne occurs whenever you are stripping your skin of oils (see #2) instead of giving it the moisture it needs. The nly thing that has worked for me is to use our Countertime Collection (see #3), which is our uber-luxe, extremely moisturizing collection. Just do it! Shop the Countertime Collection HERE!

5. You need to add a mask to your routine.
I grew up thinking face masks were like a sleep over party thing as a kid. As an adult I typically did cheapo ones I found from Target, maybe once a month. As of the last 6 months of my life, I introduced myself to the Counter+ Charcoal Facial Mask from Beautycounter and on boy – total skincare domination. If you have oily skin, I recommend using 2-3 times per week, if you have dry or combo skin, you should use it once per week. Just rub all over your face and leave on for 10 minutes. Salicylic and lactic acids aid in a gentle exfoliation, giving skin a smooth, polished look with a minimized appearance of pores. Perfect for those concerned with congestion and oily skin.
