Back to school season is in full swing. I try not to stress about being overly prepared, but these 5 things are musts the week before school starts.

I’ve never been one to stress much about the back to school time of year. Maybe it’s because Branden has always been so chill about it. Who knows? Maybe it will be more complicated when Blake gets older. I’ve always gotten more excited about it than Branden because I remember how much I loved this time of year when I was a kid. This year is a little different because we are starting at a new school (again, I know) and with Branden’s ADHD diagnoses, there are certain things I need to make sure are taken care of ahead of time.

5 Things to Do a Week Before School Starts (For School Year Success)
We start school August 26th over in these parts, and I know that we have some friends who are already back to school and some who don’t go back until after Labor Day. No matter where you’re at during your back to school transition, these 5 things will really help you and your whole family prepare not only for just back to school success, but for the whole year. And I also want to note that at this point, I’m sure you all have conquered those back to school shopping list (if not, we’ll just pretend you have!), so I’m not adding that in here – it’s a given!
1. Establish some ground rules.
This is honestly the most important one for us and we might even get them in writing on the refrigerator. We’ve really let Branden have a lot of freedom this summer with meeting new friends and coming and going as he pleases, but it’s now time to set some boundaries. With homework and music lessons and all these new things that are going to be a big part of his life, we have to come up with a schedule that he is very aware of, so that he can stay on track. These will include things like not playing outside until homework is done, how late he can stay up, chores, etc.
2. Start a routine.
A few days before school starts, we are going to get him set up for success by starting his new routine and wakeup time. We also let him go off of his medication over the summer, so we’re going to slowly get him started back on that again as we get closer to the school start date. This way there won’t be any surprises on the first day of school.
3. Tie up any loose ends.
We have gotten SO many papers and forms to fill out and they are all kind of scattered. I’m finally locking down some time to go over everything so I’m fully informed and ready for the new year.
4. Pick out a couple cool outfits.
With the weather still warm out when school starts, we typically do back to school shopping around Branden’s birthday later on in September. This gives him a chance to see whats “in” at school and then we go from there. But, there is something great about starting the school year with at least one cool new outfit they feel confident in.
5. Do something fun as a family.
I don’t care if your kid is starting at a new school or the same one, this time of year can always bring on some back to school jitters. Spending some quality time as a family helps kids relax, tiake their mind off any worries and have some quality family togetherness!
