Visiting the eye doctor annually is so important for you and your family. Today I’m sharing 5 things you probably didn’t know about your eye doctor that will make a huge impact on your family’s health.

A lot of you probably don’t know this about me, but I wear glasses. I wear them only for driving and watching tv, so that’s why I rarely have them on in photos, but they are a big part of my life, as is vision health in general. This is why I’m sporting my glasses in these photos today, to draw attention to how important our eyes and annual eye exams for our entire families really are.
There are some pretty incredible things, though, that your eye doctor can do that goes well beyond writing you a prescription for glasses and contacts. Like really incredible things that I’m sure you all have never realized. Why do I say this? Because I honestly had zero clue until recently and I’m super excited to partner with VSP Vision Care to share this information with you all today.
5 Things You Probably Didn’t Know About Your Eye Doctor
I recently had the opportunity to sit in on a webinar that was presented by the wonderful people at VSP Vision Care in partnership with the American Diabetes Association and I had a very eye-opening (no pun intended) experience. Through the stories of everyday people living with various diseases (I’ll get to all this in a moment), I was able to have a first-hand experience to learn how their eye doctors were able to identify so much that impacted their overall health.
Here are some things that I bet you never knew about a comprehensive eye exam:
- The early detection of chronic diseases such as diabetes, autoimmune diseases, and certain types of cancers can all be done during a comprehensive eye exam.
- Your eye doctor is able to detect early signs of diabetes without using any invasive needles. How is this done? They simply look at the blood vessels in the back of your eyes. This method can detect signs of diabetes up to 7 years BEFORE you would otherwise start showing symptoms.
- Eye doctors do more than assess issues with your eye health—they look at your total overall health.
- These annual comprehensive eye exams can help save lives.
- Your overall health can simply be checked by dilating your pupil or analyzing images of your retina.
Believe me mama, I know how crazy life can be and how we already have so many things on our plates at the start of the new school year, but using this time of year to take your family to the eye doctor is very important.
These little ones who are so precious to us rely on us to be present in their lives for a long time. This is why VSP Vision Care, the largest not-for-profit vision care company in the nation has set out to raise awareness and bring diabetes care and prevention into our focus. After all, we spend time and energy on self-care products to make our skin and nails feel good, but getting ourselves to get our annual eye exams is the ultimate self-care.
It is safe – and more important than ever – to schedule a comprehensive eye exam. Find a VSP network eye doctor at vsp.com/eye-doctor.
