5 Easy Ways To Prevent Postpartum Hair Loss
When you’re pregnant, your hair seems to grow like no tomorrow – it’s like something out of that Disney film ‘Tangled’. It grows longer, stronger, and thicker by the day because old hair fails to shed at the rate it used to. Many women love this about being pregnant! There’s probably everything magical in those prenatal vitamins that make hair so lush and all those bursting hormones. However, once you’ve had your little baby the hair soon falls out like it was supposed to, but leaves dull, lifeless hair in its place. Not what you want when you’re spending all of your time looking after a baby with no time for extra attention to your hair!
Losing hair after giving birth can be a really scary concept. At this point, dry shampoo has become our absolute BFF and we neglect ourselves. But I promise, there are a few, easy ways to prevent postartum hair loss and even keep your hair strong after giving birth.
Tips to keep you from losing hair after giving birth
Postpartum hair loss can be one of the most frustrating things, along with thinning hair. So much changes after bringing a new baby into the world and so many women are impacted by this. Here’s some easy tips to keep you from losing hair after giving birth that can be integrated into your everyday life to more easily prevent postpartum hair loss.
1. Eat Lots of Protein, Good Fats, and Vegetables
When you’re trying to prevent postpartum hair loss, your diet should nourish you from the inside out. If you’re eating the right type of foods, you’ll look great and feel great. You will see improvements to your body, your skin texture and tone, and of course, your hair. Plenty of protein, good fats, and vegetables will do the trick. Try to eat as clean and naturally as possible for the best effect on your hair and body. Many people think that fats will make them fat, but the truth is out body NEEDS good fats to function properly. Make sure you get your good fats from almonds, coconut oil, olive oil, eggs, and avocado, and other healthy sources. Also, here’s a great list for snacks for moms!
2. Drink at Least 8 glasses of Water per Day
Water helps us to flush out fat and toxins, and should be a big part our daily diets. Some people even drink 4 litres a day! If you can only drink 2, that’s fine. Carry a bottle around with you (we love these from ZeroWater!) and drink from it whenever you think about it. Don’t let yourself get thirsty, especially if you’re breast feeding!
3. Don’t Wash Your Hair Too Often
If you find that you’re losing hair after giving birth, washing your hair too much could be the culprit. Washing your hair everyday, or even every other day, can actually be detrimental to the condition of your hair. Only wash it when absolutely necessary, and use a dry shampoo on it to spruce it up in between washes. Some women swear by the new cleansing conditioners that leave out the harsher “cleansers” of shampoo. Lately I’ve noticed that the women who hardly ever wash their hair have the strongest locks! Dry shampoo is also a great option when you need to leave the house and Living Proof is my favorite and smells amazing!
4. Apply a Hair Mask Once Per Week
To prevent postpartum hair loss, hair masks are an incredible ally. I have a whole post here filled with the best hair masks that you really can’t afford to pass up! You can either buy one of those options, or you could make your own from natural ingredients in your cupboards! Using one of these regularly and leaving it on overnight will help condition your hair and keep it looking fantastic.
5. Use Oil
While you might think that oil will make your hair oily, it actually does the exact opposite. Oil is a great thing to have handy if you notice you’re losing hair after giving birth. You can use any oil you like on your hair to improve the condition, and you have many choices. Coconut oil. Olive oil.
Castor oil. Essential oils. Argan oil. Moroccan oil (here’s my favorite that I use on Blake’s hair religiously!)

Oils are also good for the skin and nails! Apply a little to the ends of your hair after washing but before blow drying. You can even use a tiny amount to smooth out hair and combat frizz when dry.
