Building resilience in kids is an important aspect of their development. It helps them cope with life’s challenges and setbacks, bounce back from adversity, and thrive.
We always tell Branden and Blake that it’s our job as their parents to make sure they can grow up and leave our home as fully functioning adults, ready to take on the world! Building resilience is a HUGE part of that.
5 Ways to Build Resilience in Kids
Here are 5 ways to build resilience in kids that we work on with our kiddos often.
-
Encourage a Growth Mindset
A growth mindset is a belief that one’s abilities and intelligence can be developed over time through hard work and perseverance. Encouraging a growth mindset in your child can help them view challenges and failures as opportunities to learn and grow. Praising effort over results and encouraging your child to take on new challenges can foster a growth mindset.
-
Foster Positive Relationships
Positive relationships with family, friends, and other supportive adults provide children with emotional support and a sense of belonging. This can help them cope with stress and adversity. Encourage your child to build positive relationships and provide opportunities for them to connect with others.
-
Teach Coping Skills
Teaching coping skills to your child can help them manage stress and build resilience. Coping skills can include deep breathing, mindfulness, exercise, and creative expression. Encourage your child to practice these skills regularly and provide support and guidance as needed.
-
Build Self-Esteem
Building self-esteem in your child can help them develop a positive sense of self and a belief in their abilities. Encourage your child to try new things and provide positive feedback and praise for their efforts. Help them set achievable goals and celebrate their accomplishments.
-
Encourage Problem-Solving
Encouraging problem-solving skills in your child can help them develop a sense of agency and control over their lives. Teach them how to identify problems, brainstorm solutions, and evaluate the effectiveness of their solutions. Encourage them to take initiative and responsibility for their actions.
