We need to start treating ourselves with the same kindness that we do others.

We teach kindness to our children. We are kind to those around us. We read about how kindness is the most important gift we can bestow on everyone that we interact with on a daily basis. Then why do we all suck at being kind to ourselves?
It wasn’t until I had Blake that the act of being kind to myself ever played a role in my life. I had her just two months before I turned 30, so thats a lot of years of putting myself on the back burner, mostly in my adult mom life though. I remember the weeks before I gave birth pretty vividly as we prepared for her arrival and I laid bed, pretty much in pregnant agony in the hot August heat. I woke up from one of my many naps that I would take while Branden was at school, before I waddled to get him from the bus stop and it was almost like the words “be kind to yourself,” were whispered in my ears.
In those moments, I shifted the way that I planned for my postpartum weeks. I stopped focusing on losing the baby weight and decided to connect with my new baby and my new body. I stopped being hard on myself and I realized that slowing down was the most important thing for me at that time. Since then, I have strived for more kindness when it comes to myself and wanted to share some incredibly easy way that you can all do that every single day.
7 Simple Ways to Be Kind to Yourself Everyday
Here is my no fuss tips for spreading more kindness in your direction!
1. Stop playing the compare game.
I do this. You do this. We all do this and it needs to end. Our circumstances are different than every single person around us. No two moms, women, business owners, etc are alike. Just stop it or you will drive yourself crazy.
2. Eat healthy. Duh.
I’m all for indulgences – believe me, but we’re not being kind to our bodies if we’re neglecting eating healthy on a regular basis. And eating healthy doesn’t mean that food can’t taste good! For me, it’s important to have nutrient dense foods handy so that I have something quick to reach for whenever hunger hits me. This month, I’m all about the Health Warrior Maple Sea Salt Pumpkin Seed Bars as the perfect fall “treat!”
3. Unfollow people who make you feel bad about yourself.
This goes hand in hand with #1 because I think a lot of these comparison games do happen on social media and we need to take a step back and realize that we are 100% in control of the people we’re friends with or follow. If you feel like someone is being too fake, or going through a season in their life that makes you feel bad about yours, or makes you feel less than in any way, one word: delete. They can go away with the quick click of a button.
4. Have an adult conversation.
Some days, if I hear the word “mommy” one more time, I could just scream. There is nothing better for your mental health on days like those than calling up a friend or family member, reconnecting and having a conversation that has nothing to do with diaper changes and calming meltdowns.
5. Choose safe products for you and your family.
You all know that I’m a HUGE clean beauty advocate and there is nothing kinder you can do for yourself and your loved ones than choosing products without chemicals that could make you all sick one day. Just stop doing it.
6. Look at yourself in the mirror and give a compliment.
While it might sound silly, and you don’t have to say it out loud if you don’t want to, but a simple “damn girl, you’ve got this” is sometimes the kindest thing you can do for yourself and your confidence.
7. Learn to take 5 when needed.
Once a toddler is calmed, most of the time all it takes is 5 minutes for them to be back to their happy self (before something happens again, I know), and the same goes for the mamas, too! So we all know how amazing and needed those precious 5 minutes can be some days, but knowing when to ask for them or take advantage of them is key. Dig deep. Listen to yourself and if you feel ready to burst – it’s time to take 5!
