Happy Monday lovelies! It’s a rainy day in New York City today and my evening plans already got washed away – whomp, whomp – but trying to stay positive and see through these stormy clouds because I’m determined to make it a good week. If you missed last week’s mom style Monday, I styled florals, which are so much fun to wear when we transition to spring wardrobes. This past weekend Chris had an army drill weekend, so I was home with kids and we pretty much just chilled. But, if you follow my Instagram stories you saw some park play and that we have a little bitter on our hands – never a dull moment!
Since becoming a mom, it’s all about casual style for me. Things that I can move in, look chic and can be dressed up if need be are awesome are my go-to’s. Denim on denim is a great way to do just that and my whole outfit is courtesy of Liverpool Jeans – which I know you will all love, too.
Before I get to my tips, holy moly I need to tell you about these pieces! First, these Sienna Pull on Stretch Capris are the most comfortable ever. They have no button closure and pull on similarly to maternity jeans – but they aren’t! They come in the light shade that I’m wearing and also this darker shade, too. (And if crops aren’t your thang, they have shorts which you can check out here.)
Then…there’s this amaze bomber jacket! It’s not exactly denim, but looks denim and is stretchy and comfortable in all the right places and helps you be a mom in style, every single day. These pieces are defiantly wardrobe staples versus trendy closet additions and will easily become your favorites.
7 Tips For rocking Denim on Denim
Wearing denim on denim doesn’t need to be difficult!
1. Mix up the washes and colors.
You can see that I stuck with lighter washes for this outfit, but don’t be afraid to go dark if you would rather. Just make sure when you’re wearing denim on denim that all the pieces are slightly different colors. You don’t want to end up looking like Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake at the MTV Awards a million years ago, right?
2. Play with colors.
If you really aren’t sure about this trend, start with some white jeans and a denim jacket. You can’t go wrong with that colored ensemble as it will always look chic. Or even add some great colored denim! There are so many choices these days.
3. Don’t be too matchy matchy!
Absolutely everything that you wear doesn’t need to be denim (in fact, leave any denim accessories at home!). Mix things up with a great colored sandal and even swap out a denim shirt or jacket for another of your wardrobe favorites.
4. Distress your denim.
Whether you buy it pre-distressed our just want to get some aggression out on your denim, distressing is always the right answer. Just don’t go overboard, mmmkay?
5. Use your washes wisely.
I always say how important it is to dress for your body shape and this is no different. You know your body better than anyone else, so use those washes to flatter your figure. If you want to minimize on the bottom, opt for a darker pant or skirt and vice versa on the top.
6. Layer up!
I always say the more layers the better. If you don’t want to go complete denim like I did here (here’s the link to my light wash denim shirt) then you can easily break things up with layers. I’ve even taken a plan colored tee and worn it overtop my denim shirt for a little twist. Have fun with it!
7. Remember, everything doesn’t have to be super structured.
There are so many amazing blouses (like the one I shared in my 5 favorite things post from March) that are denim focuses and not structured at all! Instead of going with a basic denim jacket or shirt, wear your denim bottom with an off the shoulder denim blouse, a denim dress, or even a cold shoulder denim top to mix things up!
What’s your favorite way to wear denim on denim?
Fashionably Yours,
Allison
