If you are an NYC Mama, summer break is fast approaching, starting officially June 26th. If you are a suburbs Mama – God love ya, because your kiddos are already probably on summer break and terrorizing the shit out of you – just kidding!
I can whole-heartedly say this: I am hopeful, and kind of excited about summer break this year. In fact, I’m in a completely different frame of mind than I was last year.
Last year, we sent our little guy to summer camp, and since it was mostly great, I even wrote a piece last year called “Benefits of Summer Camp: Why It’s Great For Parents & Kids Alike.” Now, I’m not knocking summer camp. We just felt that along with the good, B also picked up on some bad habits that we didn’t like that rubbed off on him from some kids there, so we chose to say “no” this year. I even got the conversation going on about this debate on Facebook, because in this NYC culture, summer camp is “the thing” that you do.
While I’m open to admit that I am feeling that pressure to plan wonderful activity filled days, but still remain wildly in control of my businesses, I know there will most likely be a balance struggle taking place during these months of no school. But I’m excited about what is to come, and wanted to share some of those hopes with you all.
Summer break, this year I think I’m looking forward to you.
1. I want more connection.
I will be the first to admit that our days have gotten a bit robotic. We get up, rush to get Daddy and B out the door, we all go about our day, I pick B up, we then do homework, etc. It’s getting lame, and it feels like we are all so focused on the tasks that we need to get done to make it to tomorrow successfully that we are missing the connection. I want to take that back this summer and hold onto it so dear.
2. I want new experiences.
Even if we just do 1 new thing this whole summer, I’m craving something new.
3. I want a memorable vacation.
We are doing our first big family vacation this year with my sister and her kids, and hopefully my parents, too – and I’m stoked! I can’t wait to get pictures of all the kids building sand castles, swimming in the hotel pool at midnight, and eating way too much ice cream. Bring. It. On.
4. I want to live more in the moment.
This is more of a wish for myself, but important nonetheless. I want to close my computer and stop to make homemade popsicles with B in the middle of the afternoon, unplanned, if that’s what he wants to do. I want to spend more spontaneous moments at the park, or the museum on rainy days, and remember how important it is to just have fun. I posted the above picture a couple weekends ago on Instagram, and had a TON of out-pour from Mamas who could relate. Chris was working, and Branden asked if we could go to Central Park and then out for Thai food – a date request that I certainly could not say no to. We had a blast and he even tried some new foods!
5. I want B to learn something new.
I think that summer is for the learning that goes beyond the classroom, the things that you just can’t learn from a text book. I want him to walk back into school as a second grader in the fall with some new knowledge that he is bursting to share with his classmates.
What are you hoping to do during summer break? We would love for you to share with us on Facebook!
Fashionably Yours,
Allison
