You guys, this past year has honestly been a whirl-wind. I feel like I’ve blinked my eyes and I have an almost 9-year-old on my hands and I’m starting to plan little Blake’s first birthday party. This school year has been a challenging one with Branden in third grade and some of the ups and downs we’ve dealt with in terms of the school, bus and bus driver issues, so when summer rolled around, I really wanted us all to just chill out. But at the same time, I didn’t want to sit behind the t.v. al summer with the AC blasting, I wanted us to get out there and create adventures and memories together.
So mid-May, when an opportunity came my way to go to Orlando for a conference, without much planning I said “yes” and turned it into a big family vacation. This is the summer of fun in my eyes and I want to cultivate as much adventure as possible with my crew. But, with that being said, we do have young children and need to keep them safe and healthy – so I have SingleCare in my back pocket to ease my mind.
So we started our adventure by going to the place where adventures are made: Universal Studios Island of Adventure. I’m not typically one for theme parks (I know, I know) and doing it with a 10 month old didn’t make it that much more appealing, but I said “let’s do it” and we totally did. In the spirit of the day, I even went on some rides and decided not to stand on the sidelines, trying to show my kids the importance of taking risks and stepping outside their comfort zones. We played at the pool all day, stayed up way past our bedtime, cancelled reservations and went with the flow. Breaking free from our structured days lets us all feel more adventurous and quite frankly – relax.
Here’s my 3 major tips for cultivating adventure with your family:
Yes, you too can break free from the rigid cycle we’re all on and have fun!
Kiss the schedule buh-bye.
This was SO hard for me, as I thrive in all aspects of my life when I have structure and a set plan, but theres absolutely no spontaneity in that. While we were away, my only task for each day was to have fun and I know with every cell of my being that we achieved that. Now that we are back home, we’re back to a routine Monday-Friday, but weekends are fair game and we wake up on those days with our schedules wide open to bring on new opportunities.
Make sure you have all your bases covered.
There’s absolutely no way that I can cultivate adventure with any sense of calm if I don’t have our health and safety in the forefront. SingleCare has been amazing for that. This free to use service offers savings of up to 80% when you file prescriptions, dental, vision, and on-demand virtual doctor visits. You simply sign up on their website for your free card and you have the opportunity to compare prices and see the saving you’ll gain from 20,000 providers nationwide.
Their pharmacy savings card is accepted nationwide at over 35,000 pharmacies, including Walmart, Walgreens, CVS, Rite Aid, and Kroger’s – amazing if you ask me. Their goal is to make sure that everyone has the medications and access to services they need at all times, whether it’s a life-saving drug or a routine dental cleaning. You don’t have to worry about about networks, coverage limitations or deductibles, which puts my mom mind at ease.
Try something outside your comfort zone.
Branden can be a little hesitant whenever it comes to doing things that are adventurous, and then there are other moments when he’s all in, and I think it boils down to being in his comfort zone. Personally, I think it’s important try to push through as it teaches them to make some necessary risks in life. I never really broke through comfort zone barriers until I met Chris and it has been the best thing for me and has brought on increased confidence over the years. I want that for our kids, too. So we achieve that by stepping outside of our regular activities and trying new things – even if it’s something simple like trying Indian food!
How do you make sure your family experiences adventure?

What a great vacation you had! I wish I could relax a little more when I’m on vacation with the family. I just get too nervous! But having something like SingleCare could help. Video doctors visits? This would be amazing. I got sick when I was down at Disney last year and I could have really used this.
