Essential Oil Sleep Blend Recipes
For real: today’s essential oil sleep blend recipes were written out of pure necessity. I’ve shared a little bit on social media, but I’m having a really hard time with Blake sleeping through the night right now. We’ve had about 2 nights since we moved to Pittsburgh where she’s slept through the night, but other than that, I’m up 3-4 times at night with her. I feel like I have a newborn on my hands again and I’m honestly struggling to make it through the day. I’m all dark circles and floundering through life, mombie style over here these days. You all know that I’m a huge fan of essential oils and am extremely cautious about using them around Blake (I have a full guide here about how to properly use them around babies and toddlers), so I created 2 different essential oil sleep blend recipes using the same 2 oils that you can use as a spray or as a roller – whichever you prefer!

Essential Oil Sleep Blend #1: Sleepy Time Roller
This sleepy time roller is a great way to help yourself or little ones feel much calmer for bedtime. With little ones, you don’t want to use oils directly around them or on their skin, so using these essential oils sleep blend is a great way for them to still get the benefits with a carrier oil involved. First, some definitions you might want to be answered about the oils we’re using for these essential oil sleep blend recipes:
Carrier Oils – These are simply oils that are used to help dilute the oils (because they are more powerful than you might think!) and carry them into the skin. There are many different types, but the most common are coconut, sweet almond oil, jojoba oil and castor oil.
Lavender Oil – Due to its incredibly calming effects, lavender oil is one of the most popular used today. It can be used to reduce stress and anxiety, help relieve headaches, relieve pain and even burns and wounds and so much more! It’s definitely one that you want to always have handy!
Chamomile Oil – This oil is widely known for its sedative and soothing qualities, so mixing it with lavender is truly a winner if you’re having trouble sleeping at night. It will calm, ease stress and can even help calm anger and moments of grief.
What you need for this recipe:
- 3-4 drops of lavender oil
- 2-3 drops of chamomile oil
- carrier oil of your choice (I used Sweet Almond Oil)
- Roller tube
Simply open up your roller and pour the ingredients into the tube. Seal it very tight and use daily to help promote regular sleep!
Essential Oil Sleep Blend #2: Sleepy Time Room or Linen Spray
For this essential oil sleep blend, we’re going to be using the exact same oils as above, making it really easy for you to have both of these blends handy for double the impact! You will also need a couple other ingredients, outlined below.
What you will need for this recipe:
- 3-4 drops of lavender oil
- 2-3 drops of chamomile oil
- 1 spray bottle
- distilled water
- 1/2 tsp of either vodka or rubbing alcohol (this helps the fragrance of the oils linger longer)
Drop your lavender and chamomile oils into your spray bottle, followed by your alcohol of choice. Swirl it around and then fill the rest of the bottle with your distilled water, shake and you’re ready to go! Spray in the air or on your pillow as you’re getting ready for bed for some extra good sleep!

Tips for using these essential oil sleep blend recipes
- I keep the book, Essential Oils Every Day by Hope Gillerman at my bedside and it’s a really great introduction to oils as well as an awesome reference if you’re curious about what oils do, how to blend them, etc. You can find everything here!
- Keep in mind that oils are medicinal so using them properly is really important.
- Applying them every day is how you will get the best results, so spray your pillow each night, for instance. Or, if using the roller blend, apply to temples or behind the ears every day, allowing the oils to move to where your body needs it to work.
I really hope that you all enjoy these essential oil sleep blend recipes and take full advantage of all the amazing things that Simply Earth has to offer (especially that FREE bonus box!). Let me know how these blends work for you and your family. I love having natural alternatives handy through essential oils to help heal and just make every day better!
XOXO,
Allison
