Internet Safety Tips Your Family Should Live By
I have an extremely vivid memory of being online as a middle schooler and chatting with a boy I had a crush on using Instant Messanger and my dad switching the phone cord to make a business call, kicking me offline. I didn’t have a cell phone until I turned 16 and my parents biggest worry with that was me making calls before 9 pm, whenever they were free. Being parents today is completely different. Almost every kid had some sort of device and they are all like minicomputers and connected to the Internet. We have so much to worry about. I’ve talked about how to prevent cyberbullying and raising your child to be Intenet awesome, and I’m spreading that message with these Internet Safety tips again today.
Internet Safety 101
Branden got his phone for his 10th birthday in 2018 and since then, we’ve truly been on a mission to create healthy digital habits with tech using Google’s safer Internet tools. With so much happening in the world of online gaming, social media, etc, every single day, there is a lot to think about whenever you give your children access to the Internet. With the help of Google, these are the key tips that we stress every day with Branden and have pretty much drilled them into his head at this point.
Be Smart: Think before you post and always (always, always) protect your privacy and never give out any information that could put yourself at risk. You never know who is actually behind the other accounts!
Be Alert: We’re always telling Branden to watch out for scams and make sure to only spend time on credible sites.
Be Strong: It’s crucial to always create STRONG passwords and even switch them up from site to site.
Be Kind: This is just as important online as it is in real life and helps to prevent any type of cyberbullying.
Be Brave: We teach Branden not to be afraid to speak up or report inappropriate comments and messages.
