7 Ways Moms Can Fit In A Daily Workout Routine
I live a pretty sedentary lifestyle. I know that I talk about running quite frequently and my journey getting back to it postpartum, but I’m behind the computer, on my butt a lot. Because of that, I make it a priority to fit in a daily workout routine….because balance. I workout generally four to five times per week, but I stress a daily workout routine because it’s still important to get moving on those rest days.
Like all of you, I don’t really have a lot of time in my day for a daily workout routine. I have to make sure that I do it while Blake is awake because I have to use her nap for working on the things I need major focus to finish. Over the years my daily workout routine has gone through so many changes from being able to do lengthier workouts when Branden was at school before Blake was born, but the season I’m in right now is the “go hard or go home” kinda quick workouts for shorter periods of time. I’ve learned a thing or two about fitting this in amongst the chaos of daily life, and am also going to share what I do on my rest days to at least get up and moving.
How to Fit in a Daily Workout Routine
If you’re struggling to make it happen because of too much work, lack of time, toddler always in your face – whatever – these tips will truly help you thrive and get in that daily workout routine without much effort.
1. Make it a HIIT workout.
I always can be found singing the praises of a HIIT workout (high-intensity interval training) because they are powerful and quick. While I love to run, the days that I do that require more time than I normally have. I share more information about HIIT workouts here, but my biggest takeaway is that they can be done on limited time, which is amazing for moms. I’ve shared before that I love doing Blogilates youtube videos and because she has so many amazing HIIT workouts, they never get boring, I can mix and match the daily workout routine that I do every day if I wanted to, and if I’m on an extra strict schedule one day I can do just one or two videos (just a 10 or 15 minute workout) and still feel accomplished.
2. Block out the time.
I live by the motto, “you don’t find time, you make time” for pretty much everything. Blocking out a specific time each day that you know you are going to dedicate to a daily workout routine will help you to fit it into your day organically without ever having to think about. And I also don’t always block the same time each day, because they are all different. It’s important to be flexible with yourself but still strict about getting it done.
3. Run or walk with your kids.
I have a special place in my heart for our BOB jogging stroller. It has allowed me to get back into a running routine and take Blake along with me. I wish that I had this stroller in my life when Branden was a little baby. There is nothing better than being able to take your kids along with you while you fit in your daily routine, whether they are napping or just enjoying their surroundings. And with the age gap between Branden and Blake, typically Branden rides his bike along with us unless we run while he’s at school.
4. Include recovery stretching on your days off.
Because it’s important to let your body recover and take days off so that you don’t injure yourself, I incorporate recovery stretching with the kids (and Chris if he will join in) on my days “off.” I don’t like to workout during family time and like to use the extra time during my rest days to work, I do my recovery stretching in the evening, on the living room floor while we’re all together. I normally do 10 minutes of deep stretching and it makes a huge difference in your day and gets your body moving.
5. Have a plan.
Know how you’re going to sweat. Seriously. You’ve already mapped out when you’re going to workout at this point, but also make sure to plan out what kind of workout you’re going to do. For instance, I alternate between HIIT and weight training and then whenever the weather is nice and I have more time, I hit the pavement and run. Your daily workout routine can look completely different, but just know what you are going to do each day and you will save extra time.
6. Do it first thing in the morning.
Doing your fitness routine first thing in the morning allows you to get it out of the way and start your day. Also, I notice that Blake is just a wee bit calmer first thing in the morning as she’s easing into the day so requires less attention from me during my workout at this time.
7. Play hard.
This probably goes without saying, but chasing after your kids burns mega calories. Take them to the park. Run around the yard. Have a mommy and me yoga session. Whatever floats your boat. But play hard with the kiddos because not only is it always great bonding time, but a wonderful way to burn some extra energy for you both.
