15 Daily Habits To Instantly Boost Your Mood
I am so far from being the perfect, happy 100% of the time mom. (If you need some extra advice, here’s what I keep in my mental health “toolbox.”) I yell, my kids yell. Blake is sassy. Branden is short tempered. I have a teeny tiny fuse by the time 6 pm rolls around. I’m sometimes called a mean mom. Every day is different. But I will say that I do put a conscious effort into having fun and being in the best mood that I possibly can be most of the time. This didn’t happen overnight and as of lately I’ve found that there are more and more things I’m putting energy into every day – really simple things – that light up a smile of my face and completely shift my mood. I started doing there here and there, but more and more they have become a part of my daily life and I wanted to share them all with you.
15 Mood-Boosting Habits
I just want to start by saying that I’m not going to tell you to lather yourself in essential oils or hit the gym like you’re training for a marathon. These are down to Earth, simple, daily habits that you can do without spending any money. Promise.
1. Take a nap.
I keep joking with Chris because, for the longest time, I felt like naps were for lazy losers (I know, I know). And then all of a sudden over the last couple of months, I’ve discovered the beauty of them and holy crap, sleeping when the baby sleeps is no joke an instant mood booster!
2. Cuddle with your kids and/or your partner.
I especially do this after a really hard moment. Like when Branden and I argue over something or Blake has a meltdown because she wants to walk around the house with my can of sparkling water. You get through that hard moments when you’re feeling crappy, hug those kiddos or your partner tight and you are back on track for the day.
3. Pick up a book.
I’ve always loved to read. It helps me sleep and calms me. Grab a book you’ve been wanting to read and dig in. If you need some ideas, here’s a great list of books for moms.
4. Get out of the house.
Changing your surroundings is an incredible way to boost your mood. If I’m cooped up inside the house too many days in a row behind the computer, I can feel myself getting restless. Get out of the house and do whatever. You will be amazed at the way it shifts your mood.
5. Listen to music.
I mean….there’s NOTHING like music to bring a smile to your face!
6. Watch a comedy.
Especially if you’ve had a challenging day, plan to throw on a comedy at night after the kids go to bed. There’s nothing like a good giggle to get you riding the happiness train again.
7. Spend time with people who have your back.
Self-explanatory. Make room in your day for people who really care about you.
8. Do something you’ve been putting off.
It’s pretty incredible to feel a weight lifted off your shoulders whenever there is something looming over you gets done. Get up. Do it. Smile with relief. Boom.
9. Do something for someone else.
Okay, I get that we do a million things for our families every day. But there are simple acts of kindness that we can do each day that don’t cost a thing for others in our community that will make you feel so good to be helping someone else!
10. Wake up earlier.
I know this sounds nuts. However, when you wake a tiny bit earlier and have an extra 20 minutes for yourself, it really can help the rest of the day fall into place.
11. Say no.
As women, we have a habit of “yessing” everyone because we don’t want to miss out, want to make sure we are involved, our kids asked us to – whatever. So many reasons why. But overcommitting can cause so much stress and anxiety and really lead to you being stretched too thin. Just stop.
12. Say yes!
However, go ahead and say yes to opportunities you are passionate about!
13. Drink water.
Water is effing amazing. Feel bloated? Drink water. Feel tired? Drink water. It is one of the most important things that help our bodies function properly, so actually getting in those 8 glasses a day will make you feel so good.
14. Set goals
I know that we’re all busy, but setting goals for ourselves can be incredibly invigorating. No matter how long it takes to achieve, set that goal, write it down and go for it!
15. Forgive.
There’s nothing worse than being mad. Forgive people who have upset you and move on. Life is too short to be anything but happy.
