Being married to a soldier teaches you new things every day. My husband is a wealth of knowledge and these are the 5, life-changing things that have stood out to me over the years.

5 Things Being an Army Wife Has Taught Me
I don’t always talk about my life as an army wife and I really should open up about it more than I do. If you’ve followed along from the beginning, you know that Chris was ready to leave for basic training two weeks before I met him and we has a whirlwind romance of sorts, being married and pregnant pretty quickly. We got lucky and were stationed for almost 5 years in Washington DC area then he went into the reserves back in NYC. Being in Pittsburgh now and Ohio in June, he still has his reserve weekend once a month and our schedules are built around that and his full time job.
Being married to a soldier has taught me so many things from the very first moments of saying our “I dos.” He was gone a lot, which meant that I was alone a lot, but things got a little bit easier whenever he transitioned from active duty to reserves. It’s interesting because Chris always talks about all the things he’s learned from me over the years, but there have been some tride and true messages I’ve learned through our everyday life together that have shifted my perspective on many things and helped make me the person I am today. They might seem simple, but as a busy mom, I too often forget to stop and pay attention to these important things.
1. Make sure you don’t put your self care on the back burner.
I’m really big on self care, but that didn’t come without the influence of my husband first. Once I became a mom, holy cow, I put myself last whenever it came to almost everything. My husband though, always made sure that he took time for basic things like making sure he had the perfect shave going on. Because of this, he’s been so excited to test out the new SkinGuard razor,
Frequent shaving that is required by the military can be really harsh on your partner’s skin and having Gillette’s new SkinGuard razor, new at Walmart, handy is truly a blessing!
2. Get yo-self a haircut….more than once a year!
As we know, our military men get hair cuts allll the time. I swear Chris has a special relationship with ever barber he’s used over the years. It’s like clockwork that once a week he goes to get a trim, meanwhile me on the other hand just let mine grow and grow. However, I recently stopped putting my hair cuts on the back-burner and making it to the salon regularly and its made me feel like a million bucks. Total game changer.
3. Use products that you trust.
I’m typically the one looking for what brand is on sale and going with the cheapest version of whatever it is I’m searching for, but Chris has really taught me that magic of only buying products that we truly trust over the years. With the need to shave constantly being in the military, he has always only bought Gillette products over the years for his super sensitive skin. They recently came out with a new product, the SkinGuard razor, is specifically designed for men who have sensitive skin and deal with razor bumps because of it – and is the first razor of it’s kind to do so!
The SkinGuard bar is positioned between the blades to minimize “tug and pull” and cut hair at skin level, helping to prevent irritation. The precision trimmer on the back is great for hard-to-reach areas and styling facial hair. As you know, our military husbands don’t have time to fuss with products that don’t work and this is a great one to have handy at all times. For best results, use with new PURE by Gillette shaving gel or PURE by Gillette shaving cream, also available at Walmart.
4. Take naps when you can.
I know this might sound silly, but for the longest time, I thought that naps = lazy. I never was one to sleep when the baby slept because I was always too busy to slow down. Then I started getting older and realized that naps were the one thing missing from my life and I couldn’t believe that I had poo-pooed them all these years. Being in the military, Chris catches his zzz’s whenever he can after working long hours and it’s so good for your overall health.
5. Eat when you’re hungry.
Another one that sounds silly, but hear me out. I grew up eating specific foods at specific times of day because that was when I was “supposed to” eat breakfast, lunch and dinner. As an adult and owning my own business and going a million miles a minute, learning to listen to my body and slow down and eat whenever I’m hungry has helped keep me satisfied and actually refrain from over eating.
XOXO,
Allison
