Bring Your Kid to Workout Day!
One of the biggest concerns of parents everywhere is their kids getting too much screen time and not enough outdoors time. It’s honestly enough pressure just thinking about it to make your head spin because it really all boils down to how too much screen time is impacting their overall health. I am a bit more lenient with the screen time during the cold weather months because it’s just hard to gather everyone up and get outside on a more regular basis, but now that spring is here, it’s all about days outside. Here’s the thing that I noticed though: sometimes the older kids (like our Branden) need a little bit of nudging to get outside, but once they’re out there, they don’t want to go back in. Being outside is so good for their health, their soul, and is just plain fun.
As I’m sure many of you know, earlier this week was bring your kid to work day, which is always fun for kids to learn that their parents do other things beside being a parent. But this year, I’m working with my favorite, Health Warrior, to shed light on their Bring Your Kid to Workout Day and it’s so important that we do more of this as parents.
Health Warrior is hosting events to support this wonderful initiative in Virginia, but if you don’t live close by, we would all love to see how you get active with your whole family by posting on social media and using the #BringYouKidToWorkoutDay hashtag! If you aren’t familiar, Health Warrior is truly a remarkable brand that believes in producing foods that actually feed you and give your whole family the energy that they need to be their best selves – with minimal sugar, and plant based ingredients.
In honor of this special day, I want to share some things that I try to do on a regular basis to promote being active with the whole family:
- I run 3-4 times per week with Blake sitting in the jogging stroller and then we come back home to play outside for at least an hour afterwards. I know that she isn’t technically running with me, but with this being a part of our weekly routine, it teaches her from a young age how important being active regularly is.
- Kite flying! Oh my gosh – go to your local dollar store and pick up a bunch of kites and hit up the park or your back yard on a windy day. This will keep the kids entertained for hours!
- Bike riding! Blake does this every single day that it’s nice outside and with a little nudge, Branden will hop on his after school, too.
- Badminton! I know this sounds silly, but we pulled some old rackets and a birdie out of the garage the other day, and this has become Branden’s favorite thing. Seriously: he begs me to go outside and play this with him after school.
- Regular family “field trips.” Being out and about together is so much better than sitting behind a screen. For instance, today we’re heading out to explore Pittsburgh’s Phipps Conservatory and though we’re not running a marathon, we will be out walking around all day.
What do you and your family do to stay active?
XOXO,
Allison
