Sometimes, it’s simply about survival.
Sometimes, I Don’t Care if My Kids Eat Chicken Nuggets
Right now, our life is more about survival than routine, the way it typically is. I’m the kinda of person who thrives with a routine, so getting through these last weeks before our move has been a lot of me learning how to go with the flow. Things are a bit on the chaotic side. Every day is different. Every day has been about connivence. But even if it wasn’t, I still wouldn’t really care about heating up some frozen chicken nuggets and pairing them with fries and applesauce for a quick meal. And you know what? I think this is one of those things where the dialogue needs to be changed about, too. I’m not perfect and every meal in our life can’t possibly be filled with organic perfection on my kids plates. We’re all just mamas, doing the best we can everyday, and probably have kids who realistically turn their nose up at greens and want chicken nuggets with every meal. There. I said it. And I’m standing by it.
I know that from all of my previous posts point in the direction of me being this super health conscious, cuts her kids organic cheese slices into stars kinda mama – but that couldn’t be further from the truth (well, the end part). I AM health conscious. But I also am really, really down to earth about it all and don’t put huge expectations on myself or the kids, because sometimes (a lot of the time), they don’t like the super healthy things I prepare.
Which brings me to chicken nuggets.
They get a bad reputation. And while there are so many really great, healthier options available now that we do love, I’ll be honest that the high cost and small quantities don’t always make them something I can have on hand all the time. So when I say chicken nuggets, I’m talking about good old fashioned dinosaur shaped chicken nuggets that are found in the frozen food aisle next to the barbecue wings. My kids love them and I’m sure that yours do, too.
And I think that we’re hard on ourselves sometimes when it comes not just to chicken nuggets, but things that society as a whole say that we “shouldn’t” be feeding our kids. And while my opinion might not be the popular one, I’m willing to say that it’s really all about balance. If they are getting a veggie or fruit or even yogurt along with their chicken nuggets, then I’m super cool about it. If your kid are getting 3 meals of chicken nuggets a day from McDonalds, then that it a whole different conversation that we need to have.
But feeding our kids chicken nuggets, to me, just isn’t worth the hassle of fighting it. It’s just not. There are way too many battles that are worth having on a daily basis that I have learned pretty early on that “don’t sweat the small stuff” pretty much needed to be my mom motto.
I think it’s the simplest things, sometimes, that moms really need to hear, like how Blake eats chicken nuggets for lunch almost everyday. They are the encouragement that keeps us sane. They are what bonds us.
So, yes. I will feed our kiddos chicken nuggets without batting my eye. Without judging myself or anyone else and I think that we all should, too.
