DIY Non Toxic Toy Cleaner That Actually Works
As you all know from my constant hinting and subtle messages: we are moving! I will have the full scoop your way shortly with a life update, but right now I’m in the thick of it all and just too overwhelmed to break it all day. But we’re very excited! Anyways…I will also have a blog post written soon about choosing to live a much more toxic free life than ever before, but wanted to first share this non toxic toy cleaner with you guys that is easy to make and actually works to keep your kids toys clean.
Now I know that I’m pretty good about wiping things down during flu season, but when it comes to everyday cleaning of all the toys, I tend to overlook it. I’m trying to be better about that. The recipes down below are wonderful because you can use them in one or two ways, whichever one works best with your life. Using the same ingredients, the first is a spray option that is diluted and stored in a spray bottle for a quick spraying of your kids toys when you know they can use a good wipe down. The second version is the diluted mixture that you would store in a traditional plastic bottle and use a few cap fulls whenever necessary to soak some toys. I prefer this method from time to time, especially whenever toys go from outdoor to indoor play and they just need a really good cleaning. It’s also easy to use in the summer months to just throw things in a bucket while playing outside. The choice is yours!
How to make this Non Toxic Toy Cleaner Spray
You simply mix together all of the ingredients below (linked to the best places to buy everything) and spray it right onto the toys that need to be sanitized. Easy peasy! The essential oils being used both have deep cleaning properties and smell great paired together. I sometimes even add a little sweet orange essential oil for a citrus boost! The recipe uses vodka because it has extreme cleansing properties and also helps essential oils to keep their fragrance longer whenever used in a spray situation (you can also see it here in my pillow mist recipe).
What you will need:
- 30 drop eucalyptus essential oil
- 30 drops lavender essential oil
- spray bottle
- 3/4 cup white vinegar
- 1/2 cup of vodka
- 3/4 cup water
How to make the toy cleaner concentrated soak version
You will use the same ingredients as above, but you will eliminate the water and use a basic storage bottle (like this). Whenever it is time for you to use, fill a bucket with warm water and a few cap fulls of this concentrated version and soak the toys as long as you see necessary.
Additional ways to use this toy cleaner:
- You can soak cloths in the mixture for easy cleanups, kinda of like a non toxic version of Clorox wipes
- You can use it as a disinfectant for everyday home use, however, disinfecting typically comes after the cleaning part, so think of this as more of a sanitizer
