10 Things Healthy Moms Do Everyday
To me, motherhood and health really go hand in hand. If things are “off” for me mentally, physically or emotionally, then I’m not doing the best for my kids. I noticed a huge change in not only the way I feel about myself, but my whole demeanor whenever I let one of these things slip – and it’s not pretty. Believe me though, I’m not one of those judgy moms over here sitting on my high horse encouraging you to hire a full time nanny so that you can tend to all your personal needs. (Though that would be nice to have.) I am right there with you all in the motherhood trenches, no nanny in sight, and playing the juggling game every single day. It’s hard. I think for me, the big takeaway is to hold yourself accountable because no one else is responsible for your health besides you.
Because living a healthy lifestyle is really when our physical, emotional, and mental needs are all balanced, I’ve put together a list of 10 things that help with just that – without sacrificing huge amounts of time during the day. It’s all about being mindful.
1. We accept the kind of parent we are.
I will never be a Pinterest Mom or the perfect home room mom and it took me a while to accept that, but once I did things were easier on me. Our kids love us for who we are.
2. We workout – even if it’s just 10 minutes.
I don’t have time to do a long workout each day, but every mama should be doing something. (Read: Why a Workout Routine is So Important For Moms) I find that on days where I’m not running or lifting, I’ll lay on the floor while Blake is at her play kitchen and do some crunches and stretching and even just that little bit makes me feel amazing. Believe me, I have my lazy moments, too. It’s not always easy to find the motivation, but I know that if you can dig deep, you will feel it inside you.
3. We eat healthy, as much as we can.
It’s important to be realistic about healthy eating and knowing that is key. We’re humans, we can’t be perfect 100% of the time. However, every once in a while, a product comes along that is both healthy and will satisfy everything your taste buds are yearning for: the Health Warrior Pumpkin Seed Protein Bars! These wonderful nuggets of goodness are organic, low in sugar, dairy free, GMO free, gluten free, soy free and plant basted perfection!
4. We laugh.
Giggling is so good for the soul! Period.
5. We give ourselves pats on the back.
It’s so easy to be hard on ourselves because we have this idea of perfection we’re always striving for that doesn’t actually exist. There will always be something that happens during the day that upsets you or doesn’t go your way and part of being healthy is the ability to push through that and give yourself the pat on your back that you deserve. We’re always trying our best, after all.
6. We take breaks.
I wrote about the importance of breaks for moms last month in partnership with Health Warrior and it’s a concept that I continue to share and share. We put so much pressure on ourselves to be our kids everything, all day, everyday, and that’s not always possible. If you are feeling overwhelmed, give yourself a break, even a 5 minute one, and you will feel back on track.
7. We lift others up.
I wrote about this earlier this week and I have realized that being there for others and encouraging them more and more has made me feel so incredible. As women, we put too much emphasis on judging others instead of lifting their spirits and not only does it need to end, but shifting our mindset truly benefits us all.
8. We take breaks from social media.
This is a hard one for me, but I’ve found that it’s crucial for my overall health. I check my phone sporadically throughout the day, but have been making strides towards lowering my weekly screen time (thanks Apple for making those numbers accessible!).
9. We have meaningful discussions with our family.
I am the mom who is always reminding the kids about things over and over (and over), like I’m sure many of you do, too. It’s exhausting and I came to a point where I was just like “what the heck?” This cannot be the main part of the communication that I’m having with the kids each day, especially Branden. So I make it a point to deepen conversations whenever I notice there is a moment to do so. I try to strike when the iron is hot and take advantage of moments I know Branden won’t be annoyed with my questions, but enjoy answering them.
10. We make time for ourselves and our partner, outside of parenthood.
This is something that Chris and I started doing much more regularly the past six months or so and it’s been a game changer for us. But even if we can’t get out of the house for a monthly date night, we make sure to have a few shows we look forward to watching together, just us, that is so good for us.
