I’ve been testing out chemical free sunscreen and have narrowed them down to the best non toxic sunscreen for you and your family.

After what seemed like the longest winter ever, we finally have sun shiny days. Thank goodness because I don’t think that Blake could have gone another day without having regular outdoor play as part of our routine again. And of course, there’s the bonus fact that it helps tire her out. Mom win! As soon as the sun starts really shining through, we make sure to add our favorite non toxic sunscreen to our routine as well.

I know that lathering it on our kiddos from head to toe can be really annoying and difficult at times (ahem: wiggly toddler) and it much easier to use whenever the kids get a little bit older and can do it themselves. But it’s so important that their skin have that protective barrier between them and the sun. And it’s important to point out that as easy as they make like, try to refrain from using spray sunscreens as they just aren’t as effective and almost always appear on lists of least effective sunscreen each year.

Non toxic sunscreen is essentially chemical free sunscreen and as I’ve gotten older and learned more about living a toxic free lifestyle, it’s become more apparent to me that making this choice is really crucial for my families health. Because of this, I’ve been testing out a few different non toxic sunscreen options based on different needs (Ease of use, price point, etc) and rounded up my top 5 favorites for you here today in my chemical free sunscreen guide!

Why choose chemical free sunscreen?

Before I get to my full list below, I want to answer the big question of why choosing chemical free sunscreen is best. First and foremost, not all sunscreen is created equally. In fact, a lot of sunscreens do more harm than good. When looking at sunscreen labels, it’s important to keep in mind that whatever you choose will work in one of two ways:

Mineral barrier: used by creating a physical barrier or typically zinc oxide or titanium dioxide between your skin and the sun

Chemical barrier: Typically uses chemicals like oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate and octinoxate and have been proven by the EWG to be “endocrine disruptors. Many studies in animals and cells have shown that the chemicals affect reproduction and development by altering reproductive and thyroid hormones.”
