Why Setting Goals as a Mom is So Important
Motherhood is so busy. Like never-ending busy. And it’s so easy to feel pretty consumed with all the motherhood “stuff” on a daily basis and forget about who we were and what our passions were before “mom” became our title. But, I’m here to tell you today, from a mom who is equally overwhelmed and stressed, but also who won’t falter whenever there is a path to success or a goal I’m trying to achieve – you can do it, no matter what is takes.
More than anything else, setting and achieving goals are part of a healthy lifestyle. According to Goal Setting Basics, “Serotonin is a chemical found in the human body. It carries signals along and between nerves – a neurotransmitter. Found in the brain it knows to contribute to well-being and happiness. Serotonin also plays a role in your confidence and will bolster self-esteem, increase your feelings of worthiness and create a sense of belonging. To increase serotonin, challenge yourself regularly and pursue things that reinforce a sense of purpose, meaning and accomplishment.” Boom.
There is nothing like a huge dose of happy to get us through the day.
For me, goal setting is a huge part of the healthy balance in my life that a strive for everyday. Other parts of this balance include regular fitness, time to myself to unwind (even if it’s only 10 minutes), and my favorite Health Warrior Chia Seed Bars. Made with plant based ingredients, only 3 grams of sugar, dairy-free, gluten-free, soy-free, and non-GMO, these bars that come in so many delish flavor help my stay on track and fuel me through all my daily goal setting.
But, it’s so easy to say that we just don’t have the time to work towards our goals, right? We’re so busy. The kids are more important. The house needs cleaned. It’s Netflix and chill night with our partner. Our plates are so filled with all the things that we have trouble making space for what we really want to be doing, or how we want to spend out time.
Sound familiar? Of course it does. Because we’re all guilty of doing it.
But the thing is: you actually DO have the time. If you are really serious about reaching a goal, you will make space for it.
I read stories so often where women feel so lost in motherhood and I get that there are definitely seasons of that in all of our lives. However, I’ve always been a firm believer that being a mom actually helps us find ourselves.
We find a strong voice within motherhood. We gain more confidence than we ever have before because we have to be the voice of our children. So use those gains to fuel your passions – whatever that may be.
Setting goals as a mom is so incredibly healthy for us. Whenever we conquer something that we’ve been working towards, it fills you with so much happiness and gives you the ability to keep pushing forward. Think about the way toddlers are learning and absorbing so much everyday. Every time Blake does something all by herself that she’s been trying so hard to do and realizes that she actually did it – oh my gosh – the excitement is contagious! It’s exactly the same in motherhood, maybe minus the screaming, though.
And these goals we’re setting, they don’t need to be huge goals. You can start small and work up to the bigger stuff. I set goals just to get the dishes done every day and feel pretty proud of myself for making it happen. But just being able to physically or mentally cross things off of your daily, weekly, or monthly to do list is so gratifying that it puts what we’re accomplishing into perspective.
