How to Transition to Clean Beauty: A Step By Step Guide
I teased a little bit in a post that I wrote last week about how I was writing a guide for transitioning to clean beauty and I’m so excited to finally hit that publish button today! It’s really, really important to me that everyone who reads this blog understand how important it is to use non-toxic products in our households. I go a little bit deeper in my Why I Because a Beautycounter Consultant post, but I want you all to walk away with this understanding: there are 80,000 chemicals that have ZERO safety data on them. The United States only bans 30 different chemicals (compared to 1400 in the UK) and Beautycounter weeds out 1500 in our products. I want you all to strive for better beauty for yourselves, your families, and your friends. This mission is so important, you guys!

First, a few misconceptions about transitioning to clean beauty:
- If you’re going to go clean you gotta do it all at once. No. I’m going to teach you how.
- It’s very, very expensive. Nope. It doesn’t cost anymore than what you’re already buying at Sephora and Ulta. AND I’m going to share a secret for getting the good stuff for even cheaper.
Phew! Now that we got that out of the way, here’s the breakdown of what should be done immediately whenever transitioning to clean beauty all the way to the last item to chuck and replace. Here we go!
Step One:
During phase one of transitioning all of your makeup, skincare and personal care items to clean alternatives, you want to immediately get rid of and replace anything that will be directly touching your skin and anything with fragrance (you can read why fragrance is so bad for you here). These items include:
- perfume – favorite alternative is Skylar (click here to save $10 off their scent club!)
- cleanser – currently using Countercontrol Clear Pore Cleanser
- lotion – favorite alternative is Skylar again (click here to bundle their lotion + moisturizer and save 23%!)
- body wash – see above!
- sunscreen – I’m pretty obsessed with the Countersun Tinted Spray Sunscreen spf 30
- foundation – I wouldn’t use anything but the Beautycounter Tint Hydrating Foundation
Since your skin in the largest organ in your body, and it absorbs EVERYTHING you put on it and goes directly into your blood stream, it’s very important to make sure these items are gone and out of your life and replaced with clean alternatives.

Step Two:
The second phase will be all of your makeup. I group clean makeup into phase two because these items sit on top of your skin after you are already cleansed, moisturized, have your sunscreen and foundation applied. I know that the first wave can be the more expensive of the two, so during phase two, you can really pick and choose when to replace these items or simply just wait until you run out and then switch over to the clean option. These items include:
- Blush – Our Satin Powder Blush is the bomb!
- Mascara – I’m loving Beautycounter Volumizing Mascara
- Highligher – I love our powder highlighter in Halo
- Eyeshadow – Our Statement Palette has been my go-to
- Concealer – I use this Touchup Concealer Pen in Light
- Setting Powder – The Beautycounter Mattifying Power is amazing
- Eyeliner – I have super oily eyelids so I use our Precision Liquid Eyeliner and it stays in place all day
- Lipstick – Our Color Intense Lipstick is my jam!
And then anything else that I could quite possibly be overlooking!
