To me, I feel like we live in this society where we’re constantly being told, especially as parents, about all the things that we “should” be doing. Right? And then different advice always conflicts with other things that we’re heard through the grapevine and then we just go to sleep at night feeling like we’ll never catch up or be “on it” the way all the other moms are. Well I’ve got a little truth bomb here for you: we’re all scrambling and figuring it out as we go.
Because of this, I like to live my life following a little rule that I learned back in the 5th grade called KISS, or keep-it-simple-stupid. So instead of trying to follow a rule book that seems like it’s always being amended about my family’s health, I’ve focused on some really simple lifestyle changes that pack a lot of punch in the healthy department. Who is with me?
5 Lifestyle Changes for Raising Healthy Kids
One can only hope that when our kids go to school, friend’s houses and grow up to be adults that they make healthy choices all on their own. These lifestyle changes will help lay a great foundation for them!
1. Get involved.
If you aren’t already, get yourself, your family, your kids – everyone, involved in something. And honestly, I feel like it really doesn’t matter what. Branden is not a big into sports kinda kid, while Blake would go to gymnastics every single day if she could. Every child is different, but by making sure they’re involved in something will help them to grow up to be adults involved in things, too.
2. Hydrate with water that’s actually good for you.
You’ve heard me say it before and I will preach it again: we have a water crisis happening here in the United States and all water you are drinking is NOT created equally. The only way to be in control of this is to get yourself a Zerowater filtration system and start using it ASAP.
Why Zerowater? Not only does it taste better, and believe me, you will taste the difference, but it has a 5 stage filtration system that makes a huge impact on cleaning your water. Zerowater will leave your drinking water with a 000 reading (meaning ZERO dissolved solids), and you can even check it with a tester that will come with your system.
You can also go to their website, scroll about halfway down on the home page and enter your zip code to see what the total dissolved solid reading is in your area.
3. Stop using the dishwasher so much.
Recent studies have shown that by doing your dishes the old fashioned way, by hand, that kids are 40% less likely to develop allergies. Strange but true! Living in NYC, we never had a dish washer so we always washed them by hand and now we do about 50/50. Our kids have zero allergies and so rarely get sick that this has been a really important lifestyle change from the way I grew up with the dishwasher running constantly.
4. Play time before screen time.
This is a non-negotiable in our house that just keeps things balanced and makes me feel okay letting the kids have screen time. Make sure they choose play first. I don’t care if it’s running around with the dog, riding their bikes, or jogging in place. Just as long as they do something active first.
5. Fruit or vegetable with every meal.
I’ve gotten to this point where I can’t fight with the kids about everything. I grew up with my brother being the pickiest eater ever and my mom just okayed him eating fortified cereal for every meal because it wasn’t worth the argument. And you know what? He grew up just fine.
Blake will pretty much eat everything and Branden is the opposite. So our rule goes that if he doesn’t want the veggie with dinner, he’s gotta grab a fruit. I don’t care what fruit we have on hand and it can even be freeze-dried fruit, just as long as hes eating something more than protein and the occasional french fry with dinner.
