With holidays upon us and so many goal setting opportunities in the very near future, here’s how I’m ending the year on a healthy note.

2019 has been a very big year for my family and I. We have gone through highs and lows (but thankfully, mostly highs) and will be heading into a new year with so much to be thankful for. Before I get ahead of myself, this isn’t a goal list, but a plan to remind myself how to keep the momentum going. Whenever that clock strikes midnight, moving us into 2020, I didn’t feel like I overdid it with the holidays and am ready to take on all that 2020 has to offer. And you know what? You should follow my little plan, too!
Backing up a little bit, Chris called me on his way home from work the other day and we chatted a bit about groceries, because we’re hosting our first Thanksgiving in our new home. I remember him saying something like “I can’t believe that Thanksgiving is this week.” And it all hit me in that moment that the year is pretty much over. I’m not wishing it away, but that’s the truth. Thanksgiving rolls right into Christmas and the whole month of December just flies by.
Giving myself time to pause, I realized that I needed to get some of my healthy habits back in line as I could feel myself slipping. I tend to be an all or nothing kind of person where I’m super strict with my diet or super lax. This year, I’m applying a few new tactics to my regular routine to end the year on a healthy note, while still enjoy all of the holiday goodness.
3 tips for ending the year as healthy as it started
Before your Facebook feed is flooded with new years resolutions and goal prep, get yourself ahead of the noise and end the year just as healthy as it started with me.
1. Revisit your goals.
I’m slightly obsessed with writing and tracking my goals because it just keeps me on track. I think it’s really interesting how our lives can change course during the year and our goals might shift or maybe we’ve lost focus and need a kick in the butt. No matter which category you fall into, I have found that sitting down (even amongst the holiday chaos) and revisiting those goals helps save precious time in the future and is more beneficial than waiting until January. Why? Because they will be fresh in your mind throughout the whole month of December and you’re not going to want to spend the whole month undoing what you’ve been working towards.
2.Keep clean water handy literally all day long.
More often than not, we confuse hunger with thirst. It’s just a fact. Now, I’m not saying to chug water every time you feel hungry – absolutely not. But whenever hunger comes out of nowhere, I do suggest drinking a good 8oz of Zerowater before reaching for those leftover appetizers loaded with butter and cheese in the fridge.
Why Zerowater? So. Many. Amazing. Reasons. Why.
So listen up: The Zerowater 5-stage advanced filtration system dissolves all of the solids that would otherwise be floating in your water. Depending on where you live (you can check here by entering your zip code, about halfway down the screen) there are a lot of solids that need dissolved in order to have clean drinking water and this system takes those high number down to ZERO. For reference, our number is 490, which is off the charts and disgusting.
Don’t just think that because we live in the United States that our water is safe to drink either. (Read my post here about the water crisis that we’re currently undergoing.)It’s actually incredibly scary that something we need in order to function on a daily basis can be filled with things like calcium, magnesium, iron, sodium chloride and sulfides (which are compounds frequently found in groundwater supplies), that shouldn’t be in your water to begin with.
3. Crank your workouts up a notch.
Taking my workouts up a notch is something that I really try hard to do the last 4-5 weeks of the year, especially. Why not wait until January like everyone else? It just doesn’t make sense in my eyes. To me, being healthy is all about balance and I know I will be eating a couple hundred more calories here and there per day when so much great food and drinks are right in front of me. For example, if I’m typically working out 4 days a week, I will either shift to 5 days or add an extra 10-15 minutes to each of my already planned workout.
This doesn’t have to be something to stress over, and if you can’t fit it in one day, just do a little bit more the next. I’m just not a believer in over-indulging over the holidays and waiting until January 1st to try to lose weight. Just be healthy or do healthy things each day and you will catch yourself before you fall into a bad cycle.
