These 13 Common Mistakes Are Ruining Your Skin
Don’t be guilty of these mistakes!
1. Constantly touching your face.
I’m really guilty of this one, especially if I’m not wearing makeup. Try your best to keep your hands from touching your face throughout the day because your hands can be dirty or transfer unwanted oils to your face that will lead to breakouts.
2. Using makeup remover wipes instead of cleansing.
I have a client who has used nothing but makeup remover wipes for many, many years and we just got her on a brand new skincare regimen and holy crap the difference is amazing. Makeup remover wipes only do just that, remove makeup, they do not cleanse. If you are using makeup remover wipes to get rid of your makeup from the day, thats totally fine as long as you are cleansing afterwards.

3. Using an aggressive facial scrub.
If you are using a facial scrub that is really harsh, then it is actually doing more harm than good. I know, I know. We all pretty much used that St. Ives Apricot Scrub in high school, but they are undergoing a Class Action lawsuit for claims they have made and how the walnut shells actually promote again by creating tears in the skin. Don’t do it! Instead, use a scrub that isn’t aggressive and can be used a couple times a week without irritation to actually nourish your skin.

4. Not having a skincare routine to begin with.
It’s okay to have a skincare routine thats all over the place in high school, but not as you get older and especially whenever you are trying to prevent the signs of again. Use my guide below and take the skin care quiz to determine your skin type and a regiment specific to all of your needs.

5. Not investing in clean beauty products.
Being a clean beauty advocate, I can’t stress enough how important it is to break free from whatever skincare routine and makeup products you are using if they are not clean. Clean beauty can mean different things to everyone, but the general scope of the term is choosing products that are free of harmful, toxic chemicals that are absorbed into our blood stream and cause issues like cancer, heart problems, asthma, reproductive issues and more.

6. Not wearing sunscreen everyday.
Even on days where it looks like there isn’t any sun out, you must make sure that there is at least some SPF on your face. Seriously.

7. Using your skincare products in the wrong order.
Here’s how it should go: remove makeup, cleanse, tone or exfoliate, treatments, serum, sunscreen, moisturizer, oil. You’re welcome.
8. Not being consistent with your skincare routine.
In order to actually see results, you have to actually use the products you are investing in. Duh.
9. Not drinking enough water.
If you feel like you have dry skin or dull skin, the culprit can simply be not drinking enough water.
10. Having a diet that is too high in sugar.
While sweets might taste great in the moment. They aren’t doing any favors for your skin. Sugar is one of the worst things for aging your skin and body (not to mention sodium is, too). In a process called glycation, sugar-bonded proteins produce free radicals that not only destroy collagen and elastin but also prevent your body from making more. Um, yuck. Without these essential proteins, your skin loses its strength and elasticity, and fine lines and wrinkles begin to set in and then hello aging.

11. Not sleeping enough.
Not getting enough sleep is the source for so many problems in our bodies and our skin is one of them. While you sleep is when your skin has time to repair itself, improve itself, and even counteracts any environmental damage from the day.

12. Forgetting to clean your makeup brushes.
This is a HUGE one that we all tend to overlook. Make sure that a few times a month you are cleaning your dirty makeup brushes so that you aren’t transferring unwanted dirt and bacteria from the brush to your makeup to your face everyday.

13. Overdoing it with caffeine and alcohol.
Believe me, I love my cup of coffee in the morning and glass of wine at night just as much as the next person, but overdoing it really harms our skin. Since they are both diuretics, they deplete our body of water and actually dehydrate us. And we all know that being dehydrates can cause out skin to be extra dry and lead to wrinkles. No bueno. If you have coffee each morning, make sure that you are working extra water into your routine each day. And for every glass of alcohol you drink, chug a glass of water, too. And no: White Claw doesn’t count.
