This fridamom commercial was rejected from being played at the Oscars. Here’s 5 reasons why they missed the mark.
Monday afternoon, I scrolled through my Facebook feed and came across friends sharing a Youtube clip featuring one of my favorite brands, Fridababy, (we’ll, it was actually related to the launch of their new brand, fridamom). Branden is too old, but for Blake, wow – we had ALL the Fridababy products! I even went off my friends baby registry recently to make sure she had everything and I get texts about how thankful she is I didn’t buy what was on her baby registry. Hah!
But the video was in relation to their new extension of the brand, fridamom, that is seriously a one stop shop for everything women need postpartum. It’s seriously the motherload and something I wish I had 3 and a half years ago.

In these facebook posts that I saw, everyone was ranting about how this commercial was rejected from being played Sunday night during the Oscars.
Fridamom shared, “The ad you’re about to watch was rejected by ABC & the Oscars from airing during this year’s award show. It’s not “violent, political” or sexual in nature. Our ad is not “religious or lewd” and does not portray “guns or ammunition”. “Feminine hygiene & hemorrhoid relief” are also banned subjects. It’s just a new mom, home with her baby and her new body for the first time.”

So I watched.
And my body ached while watching the video. But hell – that was the point.
Whenever I first had Branden, I knew nothing about how traumatic those first postpartum days were. Forget the sleepless nights, my nightmare are of peeing after I had him.
And we wonder why there is such a stigma in this country around postpartum recovery.
So dear ABC & the Oscars, here’s why you missed the mark with not approving this commercial:
1. Because new moms need to be prepared. Despite what you many think, new moms really aren’t prepared when they have a baby for the first time. It’s a weird, gray area that so many people are afraid to talk about because it’s supposed to be the most magical time in your life, surrounded by the love of your new baby. Most moms-to-be don’t realize that the first few days, and sometimes weeks, look like this.

2. Because real life doesn’t always need censorship. We live in a world where everything must always be “Instagram perfect,” but there are just some things that need to be shared at face value. There shouldn’t be a taboo around postpartum days and struggles and anxiety and depression. These things need to be talked about. (And by the way: if you try to share this commercial on Facebook, there’s a good chance they will take it down from your page.)
3. Because moms need to feel less alone. Reading through the comments on the fridamom Facebook page on their video of the banned commercial had so many women commenting about how they watched the mom and the video and 1. felt less alone and 2. felt like they were her. We need more of that in our society.
4. Because we need to realize that this is the norm, not the exception. Celebrity, influencer, stay at home mom: no matter who you are, this is what postpartum recovery looks like.
5. Because this ad make postpartum recovery look tame. As much controversy as this ad caused and as raw as it looks, it’s still not at brutal as the real thing. #dropsmic
