Whenever we first got Oliver, we stocked up on a lot of different pet care products that we found on pet store shelves because it was the first time we had a pet and wanted to be as prepared as possible. I would say that over the last 6 months or so, I’ve gotten stricter with the products that I feel are okay to have around our family. Knowing what I know now, becoming more and more of an educated consumer everyday (ahem, have you read my review of the film Toxic Beauty? It’s worth checking out!) we still make sure that we keep things like Nature’s Miracle products handy for pet stains (they really work wonders, even with messy toddler, too), but when we just need a refresher with odors, this spray does the trick for removing pet odors naturally.

Removing Pet Odors Naturally With This DIY Spray
I have to say that since we started cutting fragrance from our life, I’ve become incredibly sensitive to all of these artificial fragrances on store shelves. Seriously, the other day, Blake got into an old bottle of perfume that was (and still kinda is) my favorite fragrance of all time. But it’s NOT a clean fragrance. It’s been sitting on our bathroom shelf since we first moved into our home in June, and I opt for clean fragrances for everyday wear. Well she sprayed it like a maniac and I swear it smelled like it seeped through every crevice and surface in our entire home. And it gave me a headache and made me sick to my stomach.
That’s how powerful toxic fragrance can be.
So with the inevitable pet odors that come from owning pets, no matter how clean you keep them, I started making my own. While there are plenty of ways you can focus on removing pet odors naturally with different recipes, I have found this one to be the best. It can most definitely also be used as a regular home fabric refresher spray that won’t make you sick (like Febreeze can), but it really is wonderful to elevating those strong pet odors. You can thank me later!
What you need:
- 2 cups of baking soda (this ingredient is option, but great for already set in stains)
- 1 cup of apple cider vinegar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup water
- 15-20 drops of lemon essential oil
- 5 drops of eucalyptus essential oil
- 5 drops of rosemary essential oil
- 1 spray bottle
How to make this odor pet removal spray:
First, combine together the salt and your essential oils. You can just do this inside your spray bottle to reduce the amount of containers you use to make the spray.
Then, add in your water, apple cider vinegar, and mix until the salt has completely dissolved. I always make sure to label the mixture, so I don’t get it confused with something else.
Whenever your met has an accident or there is a pet odor coming from an area they often hang out, give it a squirt.
Tips for removing pet odors naturally with this diy spray:
- If you are using the spray to clean up an accident, drench the spot with the spray, let sit for 20 minutes and then blot it up with a damp cloth.
- If you are using the spray to get rid of an old stain, this is where that baking soda will come in handy! Drench the spot with the spray and then coat with baking soda. Let it sit for 24 hours and then scoop up everything it picked up. Vacuum up any leftovers!
