Why is it so hard to get kiddos to drink water and stay hydrated? It seems like it would be the simplest thing in the world, but of course, they run towards sugar-laden juice first and water is always second in line. It makes me so angry as a parent and I’m constantly trying to get water to be the first choice for Branden and Blake.
With today being National Hydration Day, I thought that it would be a fun way to celebrate by doing some research (yes, I took the legwork out of it for you, mama!) and rounding up 25 ways to get kids to drink more water.

25 Ways to Get Kids To Drink More Water

- Add fresh fruit.
- Educate them! I can’t stress this one enough. If we want out kids to make educated choices whenever it comes to food and drinks – especially whenever we aren’t around to help – they have to at least understand why getting those 8 glasses in a day is so important.
- Buy them a cool water bottle to drink their water in.
- Freeze things like lemons and fresh fruit into ice cube trays and then add it to their water cups.
- Be a water drinking role model. If they see you doing it, they are more likely to be chugging that water themselves.
- Try setting up a rewards program at home. Every time they finish a glass of water they get a sticker.
- Do it as a family. Whenever eating out, for instance, have everyone choose water to drink. It will save you money, too!
- Have fun straws handy to drink their water through.
- Make water readily available to kids. Having your Zerowater pitcher always filled and in the refrigerator means that it’s always accessible to them.
- Have fresh fruits and vegetables accessible to kids, too. There’s a lot of water in fruits especially, but vegetables too and they make a great snack + hydration option for little ones.
- Blend it with lots of crushed ice – this makes it more fun and refreshing!
- If your kids don’t like the flavor of water, give it a small splash of fruit juice.
- Set a timer so they remember to stop what they are doing and drink some water every so often – this is especially important whenever you’re out in the sun.
- Be active. Seriously, whenever their body is moving, they are going to get thirsty.
- Purchase fun ice trays. You can even get ones in letter and number shapes.
- Teach your kids how to serve themselves water. I promise, they will love that little bit of independence and it will inspire them!
- Make it a little competition, within reason. See who can drink the most glasses of water every day or get to their 8 servings per day, first.
- Establish a routine with water. (I.e. you drink a glass of water as soon as you wake up, an hour before bed, etc)
- Don’t ever feed your kid juice to begin with (lol, is that even possible?). As soon as they taste it, it’s all they will want.
- Get them involved in making things like smoothies that use water or ice cubes in the recipe.
- Make a rule that before they start playing outside, run on the soccer field, swim, etc, that they have to drink a glass of water so they don’t get dehydrated.
- Teach them to understand the signs of dehydration such as chapped lips, dry mouth, limbs feeling cool, etc.
- Make sure your water tastes good. Again, this is where Zerowater comes in. Kids aren’t going to want to drink the water if it doesn’t taste good.
- Always have water with you, even when you’re on the go.
