In the 21st Century, connected life means extensive mobile usage. MobileParent.org., from CTIA, the wireless industry association, is a great resource for being a responsible digital parent, and keeping your kids safe online.

With Blake just turning 7 and Branden about to turn 15 (gasp!), there is a lot of mobile device usage in our home. We have been lenient over the summer, but as school is back in session, we’re implementing stricter rules around screen time and encouraging a healthier relationship with technology.
Setting Family Rules for Healthy Wireless Use
Like most things in life, moderation is better than excess. Here are key ways we’re setting family rules for healthy wireless usage.
Lead by example
When parents demonstrate a balanced approach to technology, children are more likely to follow suit. A great example of this is reading a book before bed instead of scrolling through your phone.
Open Communication
When we gave Branden his first phone at 10 years old, we discussed the importance of responsible wireless use. We encouraged an open dialogue about the benefits and challenges of technology and the role it plays in our lives. We also reminded him that the phone was a way to keep him safe. If we call or text, he must respond.
Designated Tech-Free Zones and Times
Identify specific areas in your home where wireless devices are not allowed, such as the dining table or bedrooms. Additionally, establish designated “tech-free” times, such as during meals, family outings, and before bedtime.
Teach Digital Etiquette and Respect
This includes, but is not limited to: respectful communication, responsible posting on social media, and protecting their privacy online. Put another way that’s already familiar: “treat people the way you want to be treated,” especially in digital spaces.
Establish Homework and Study Guidelines
School always comes first. Period. Set guidelines for using wireless devices for educational purposes. Encourage designated study times and offer support and guidance to ensure productive online learning. If kids have trouble respecting these rules or just need a reminder, using parental controls on their phone is a huge help!
About MobileParent.com
From providing tips for keeping kids safe when they’re using a wireless device and blocking access to inappropriate and adult content to guides for navigating cyberbullying, Mobile Parent, from CTIA, the wireless industry association, helps parents develop the best family rules for wireless use.
Think about it: wireless technology is changing the way kids communicate with each other and us (anyone ever text their kids that it’s time for dinner?), learn, and play with one another. They swipe, they click, heck some are even busy coding their own apps. They are learning and taking in information faster than we think.
Together with parents, CTIA and its members want kids to be responsible wireless consumers.
And let’s be honest: keeping up with this ever-evolving industry can be like a full-time job. This is where Mobile Parent comes in as a resource that keeps parents up-to-date through articles, tip sheets, and video series that guide them through things like navigating social media, protecting data, cyber security and so much more!
