How to Find the Best Sports Bra
Our boobs change so much after becoming moms. There. I said it aloud. I’m the girl over here that had a breast reduction in high school and today, as a mom of two, I stare at myself in the mirror after showering and wonder about having a little lift almost everyday. Because of the extra sag, I’ve switched up the different types of sports bras I wear over the years because I need not only extra support, but need something that stays in place during all types of workouts.(Since I mostly run or do HIIT workouts, I opt for high support sports bras.) Let’s face it: you’re not going to get your sweat on to the best of you abilities if you aren’t wearing the best sports bra. Why? Because instead of focusing on your breathing and reps, you have something unwanted swinging in your face. Today, we’re going to change that.
In the past, I’ve focused on the importance of workouts for women and shared many tips for fitting in a workout everyday (yes, everyday!) even when you’re a busy mom. But today…today, we’re going back to the basics and taking you step by step through choosing the best sports bras and if you’re like me, how to find the best supportive sports bra. Just pretend we’re going shopping together!
Searching for the best sports bra – one that actually fits!
No matter what your cup size is before or after having babies, I think we can all agree that we’re not going to be comfortable working out unless we are wearing a great sports bra. And we should also take into consideration that if you’re wearing the wrong size regular bra, you’re probably wearing the wrong sports bra size, too. Just a couple things to think about! And of course, busy moms honestly need to be fueled by real food. Sometimes this can be challenging when we’re racing from activity to activity with kids, but I want you to know it’s possible with our favorite Health Warrior chia seed bars.
They are wonderful to have handy in your gym bag, jogging stroller and always always in your home pantry! I love how they’re only 100 calories, and while they are a small bar, they pack a lot of punch. Filled with real, plant-based ingredients and free of dairy, gluten, soy and GMOs, they are just perfection as breakfast, a snack or a treat!
First, let’s chat support
You’ve probably walked into many athletic stores or even Target and seen many different types of sports bra but not known why the support was different in each. They unfortunately never really lay that out for you. Here’s how it works:
Low impact bras: choose these whenever you are shopping for strength training, yoga, and walking or similar activities.
Medium impact bras: choose these when shopping for cycling, skiing, hiking, power walking and similar activities.
High impact bras: choose these for your aerobic activities like running, mountain biking and more!
Proper sports bra fit
So it all comes down to one thing: breast movement. The whole point of finding the best sports bra is to minimize movement of the ladies so that you can focus on things other than having them juggling in your face, right? Yup! So there are three different types of sports bras that works to minimize that movement: compression (one band, no cups and best for low to medium impact sports, encapsulation (split cups and best for low impact sports, and compression/encapsulation (combination of the two, maximum support, and what you want to choose for high impact activities).
How to tell if your sports bras fit
Here are the signs of a perfect fitting sports bra:
- Your breasts are secure if you jump or run in place.
- Your breasts are not pouring outside of the cups.
- There is no gapping between your breast and the cups.
- The band stays in place. (Life your hands over your head and test this out!)
- You are able to fit two fingers inside your shoulders straps, as these should be comfortable as well as secure.
- There is no chaffing between your skin and any part of the bra (especially important to check if there are hooks of any sort).
