Essential Oils That Are Toxic to Dogs
Adding a dog to our family has of course brought on some extra responsibilities here and there, but overall, Oliver has fit seamlessly into our lifestyle and it feels like he’s been with us forever. One thing that I did have to take caution about (in addition to Blake dropping him a chocolate chip cookie, of course), was my daily use of essential oils.  There are plenty of essentials oils, like lavender for example, that are completely safe to use around your dogs. Oliver even has shampoo with lavender essential oil in it. However, there are a lot of essential oils that are toxic to dogs that we need to watch out for.

Okay you guys: here’s my unofficial essential oils toxic to dogs list. I say unofficial because these are the oils that are known to cause distress to dogs, however, just like humans, there can be other oils that react differently with dogs. Just make sure to pay attention to your pup whenever you use oils of any kind at all.
- All citrus essential oils
- Garlic
- Cinnamon
- Yarrow
- Pine
- Tea Tree Oil
- Peppermint
- Ylang Ylang
- Anise
- Clove
- Thyme
- Pennyroyal
- Sweet Birch
- Juniper
- Wintergreen
How to still use essential oils that are toxic to dogs
If you’re like me and have your daily essential oil routine and other oils that you use here and there as needed, they are a part of your wellness routine and something you aren’t going to give up. The main takeaway when considering still using essential oils that are toxic to dogs is that these oils should not be diffused around your pup or used directly on them in any way, shape, or form. But that doesn’t mean that you have to stop using them for yourself. You can still use all of your normal oils blends directly on your skin or however you prefer, as well as diffuse them if your dog isn’t in that space with you. You just have to be cautious and conscious of where the dog is at and how you are using them. I even make sure I keep them off my hands (i.e. use my tea tree oil blend for my skin with a cotton ball).
