Every year, (for me at least) there is always a struggle with finding the “right” boots to wear in the city once it snows. Living in different parts of the country you deal with this issue differently, because you go from home to car to wherever your destination is and then back again. But here in the city, we go from apartment to walking to the train, to back out to walk in the cold again. We have to find that happy balance between fashion and function so that we don’t slip and fall – as I have done many times! Yes, the journey to finding fashionable yet functional snow boots can be quite a challenge.
Fashion + Function: Finding Fashionable Snow Boots
Whenever you are on the prowl to add some new fashionable yet functional snow boots to your closet, keep these shopping tips in mind:
- Focus on the soles of the boots first. Make sure the soles of the boots aren’t “slippy” (the Pittsburgh girl inside me says). They should be sturdy and made from a material such as rubber that will be your rescue while out and about in the snow. Remember, as much as these should be fashionable snow boots, in this case you must focus on function first and fashion second.
- Make sure they are warm INSIDE. While rainboots are great in the rain, make sure to avoid this general silhouette for cold winter weather. You want to stick your foot inside whenever trying the boots on and walk around, making sure that the inside is cozy and will keep you warm!
- Make note of the way you get them on and off. This is very important! Look at the length of the laces (you don’t want them to be too long), or the way that they zip. Ask yourself, “Are these boots easy to get on and off?” Starting your day with a struggle to put on your boots is not in your best interest. And think about this while you are shopping, because you don’t want the boots to be so elaborate that they somehow cause you to fall on your butt while hailing a cab. (Make sure you walk around the store in them!!!)
- Stick to a “1 inch heel or lower” rule. Another really important thing to remember. I understand that you probably want some height – I know that I do! But stick to this rule or you will be uncomfortable and nowhere near confident while walking around in the snow this winter.
