With the landscape of today’s beauty product labeling, we all need to be aware of how the terms “natural” and “clean” are being misused.

You guys hear me talk about clean beauty and clean beauty products constantly, and I even refer to myself as a clean beauty advocate. However, the real truth is that there isn’t any regulation as of right now in our government that really determines what that means. This means two things for all of us:
- We have to do our own research.
- We have to decide that clean beauty means to us.
Once you decide what clean beauty means to you, and I hope that you have high standards (check out Beautycounter’s Never List for some inspiration), then you are able to see whats wrong with most of the beauty product labels you read. You will be able to see past the false claims and quickly realize why “clean and natural” are the most misused words in the beauty industry.

For Real: ‘Natural and Clean’ Are The Most Misused Words In The Beauty Industry
You have to realize that chemicals aren’t supervillans.
With so many different skin issues out there, the beauty industry has become extremely advanced. We would not be able to combat so many different skin ailments without those amazing chemists who sit in labs and work on this all day for us. And just keep in mind, oxygen and water are chemicals.
Natural is the term used to define anything that is naturally occurring in nature. This can mean anything.
Clean is generally the term used to define products that do not use any chemicals that are known to cause cancer or any type of known adverse effects to your body.
However, many brands use these terms to try to fool us, this is called “greenwashing.”
‘Natural and Clean’ are terms used in greenwashing
Greenwashing is why you must research your ingredients.
Greenwashing is when brands use the terms like natural and clean as part of their marketing plan, whenever the products aren’t actually safe, natural, or clean. Because we don’t have transparent laws about beauty product labeling practices here in the United States (yet, Beautycounter is working on that), greenwashing is completely legal here. Take CoverGirl’s new “clean” line for instance, pure green washing.

The truth about natural ingredients isn’t that they are necessarily better for you, they are just cheap and accessible. And brands trick us into think they’re better.
The only time that natural ingredients are better, is when you make your own products at home and have complete control over everything going into them, like with this homemade fragrance balm. And just FYI: most naturally occurring ingredients cannot be applied to your skin raw. #justsyin
