The holiday season is upon us. As a mom, here’s what I’m most thankful for during the season of giving thanks.

Here’s What I’m Really Thankful For As a Mom
The last two weeks of our life has been difficult. I wish there was another word to describe it, that’s the one that makes the most sense. Chris had been away for an almost two week military training, and even though he surprised me and came home a couple days early, he only ended up with one day off before he had to go right back to his regular full time job. So to say that my sweet husband is tired is an understatement. And then there’s me who has pretty much been in a constant state of mom burnout with a million things on my plate and just barely holding it together. I wish that I could say that everything is all roses and sunshine all the time, but it’s not.
This is my truth right now. We had both pretty much been running on zero and now we’re all finally back together and have routines that are syncing up again. We’re returning to a state of normalcy – until the next military training that is. Without fail, the first moments that we all spend together again after being apart is filled with great reminders about why we work so hard and do everything that we do everyday.
In fact, these moments make me pretty darn thankful.
And we don’t do anything special. We just are simply together, probably watching a family movie, on the couch or in our bed – but together. During these moments of downtime there is a pretty tangible shift in the energy of our home and the happiness levels of each and every one of us. I am so thankful that we are able to have these moments together.
I’m the kind of person who is always in “go” mode and sometimes I need to be told to take a break or I just won’t. You could call me a workoholic and you would be right. So slowing down and lazy days where I get to connect with my family in a much more powerful way makes me so thankful.
And then there are the times where my family looks at me and realizes that I need a break. I need stop. I need to breathe. Heck – I need to just be. These are things I really struggle to recognize within myself because my mind is always racing with what needs to be done next on the never-ending to-do list. They look at me and say “slow down,” and we share moments of relaxation together.
As simple as this might sound, we live in a world that has glorified being busy. If you’re not busy than you aren’t working hard enough, are lazy – pretty much insert any negative comment here. To be busy is to be good, to not be busy is bad. And it’s some serious BS. And just like so many others, it weighs heavy on me because I do care what people think sometimes. I don’t want to come off as not a good enough mom because I’m not running around like a chicken with my head cut off 24/7. I realize that this is a really messed up way of thinking, which again, is why I thankful to have a family thats very in tune with my feeling and can tell me to slow down.
And of course, during these moments of downtime together when we’re most likely all cuddles on the couch together, we always have a snack or two on hand. As of lately, we’ve been obsessed with crumbling up our favorite Health Warrior Apple Cinnamon Chia Seed Bars and sprinkling them on top of yogurt for the perfect afternoon or evening treat that tricks you into thinking you’re eating a decadent dessert. With only 100 calories and 3g of sugar, they are the perfect fit for your families healthy lifestyle. They’re made with real, plant based ingredients that fill you up without weighing you down. Plus, they’re dairy free, gluten free, soy free, and non-GMO!

I guess I have to end the blog post with this, even though I think it goes without saying: being thankful for moments of slowing down with my family is an addition to being thankful we’re all happy, healthy, clothes, and have a roof over our heads. Those things always come first. But if I can choose one important thing outside the realm of having our basic needs met, it’s truly how as a busy mom, my family reminds me to stop and smell the roses.
XOXO,
Allison
