As scary as it sounds, holiday season is here! Every year it seems to come quicker and quicker and I feel less and less prepared for the whirlwind of months that is ahead – but not this year, because I’m writing “The Guide!” We all know how having a tangible outline to follow can help get us through this season without losing control, which is always a mother’s goal. So from the kinda gal who is old fashioned and still loves to cross items off her list, I’m presenting a fashion-focused holiday party survival guide for all us Project Motherhood Mamas for success and fun in the months to come.
Holiday Party Survival Guide – Because Mama Deserves Some Fun!
No matter how big or how small the parties your have coming up on your calendar are, every mama knows that it’s key to have a plan, and stick to it!
Think ahead.
Make sure you have a calendar that represents all your family’s holiday parties for the upcoming months – don’t overlook school parties, either! This will help you keep everyone’s schedules organized so that you aren’t running around trying to catch up with last minute preparations.
Plan your outfits wisely.
This is a major one, because if you aren’t feeling happy and confident in the outfit that you are wearing to all of these holiday parties, you best bet that you aren’t going to have the great time you should be having. I suggest purchasing one new dress for the holidays season, as you don’t need anymore than that unless you are heading to a much more formal black tie event. Otherwise, you have your one dress and a couple new accessories, and these items will clearly help you jazz up your outfits for these various events.
If you have the time, lay your outfit out the night before so that you have everything together. If not, take 5 minutes to dedicate to thinking about what you are going to wear and where everything is located. There is nothing worse to be scrambling around at the last second looking for tights without snags in them, and having to run into Duane Reade in a panic right before your event.
It’s all about the shoes.
Keep in mind that during most events you will be on your feet – so don’t wear killer heels that hurt after a half an hour! Be mindful when shopping for new shoes for these upcoming events and choose pairs that will help keep your feet pain free, while still looking fab!
Glam it up for evening.
If you are going to be attending a lot of after work events and need to go from day to night makeup, it’s in your best interest to keep a small makeup bag in your purse with travel sized versions of your favorite glam beauty products. Make sure not to overlook your favorite concealer to give your eyes a little brightening for the evening as well as some eye shadow to do a quick smokey eye and you will be ready to go!
Stick to a 2 drink maximum.
While there are some exceptions to this rule, try to keep yourself at a 2 drink maximum – especially at work events. This will keep both your calories down for the evening as well as keep you from saying something you may later regret.
Keep hostess gifts handy!
You never know when an impromptu invitation will roll in, so keep small hostess gifts that are gender neutral and inexpensive around the house for these situations!
Eat something healthy before you leave the house.
We all know that holiday parties are filled with calorie laden snacks and naughty goodies galore – which can be very hard to resist! Even if you have been working out extra hard and saving some extra calories and cheat meals for these moments, do yourself a favor and eat something small and healthy before you head to the party.
Relax, smile, and enjoy yourself!
We often get so consumed in looking perfect and bringing the right treat that we forget to stop and enjoy the holiday party excitement with those who we care most about, all around us – don’t let that happen to you!
