How to Dress for Your Body Type: Sweaters
Oh all of my loves with the goal to dress for your body type: I know it’s been a while! I’ve gotten busy with other things and left with series to stand alone for a couple of years. If you search through the fashion category, there are over 50 posts specific to dressing for your body shape for everything from the mysterious wide leg pants all the way through shopping for bathing suits for all body shapes. I’ve covered all the stapes, almost all of the 20 basics all women should own, but there is definitely more to dive into.
Today I’m going to talk sweaters because we are in the thick of winter here, but first I want to give you all a little refresher since it’s been a while.
When you’re learning to dress for your body type, it all comes down to the 5 different body shapes: apple, rectangle, strawberry, hourglass, and pear (I know….are you hungry?). I have a full guide here for identifying your body shape that also defines them all. It will be your main reference until you understand your body type a little bit better.
Choosing the right sweaters when you dress for your body type
Every body shape isn’t going to look the same in every sweater, especially with the added bulk to keep us warm. Here’s what to keep in mind during your next shopping trip!
Apple: It’s all about silhouette with that apple body shape and wearing sweaters that hide the tummy and elongate your overall figure. Patterns are okay, but make sure to try everything on before you buy. Cowl necks and oversized turtlenecks are great as well as wearing a fitted tee with a cool cardigan over top.
Pear: Tunics work great on the top-heavy pear-shaped body! It’s all about balance here, but I’m not just talking about silhouette, you have to pay attention to how thick the materials are that you are planning to purchase, too. Wrap sweaters are also something that works wonders on the pear-shaped body that is really difficult for other shapes to pull off!
Rectangle: Since the rectangle body shape is pretty straight up and down, you can focus on fabrics that have more bulk and add to your overall silhouette. I even advise to have fun and choose sweaters with embellishments or that are off the shoulder. And don’t be afraid to layer!
Strawberry: For the inverted triangle mamas who have broader shoulders, v-neck sweaters will be your BFF during the winter months. Simple sweaters are a great option, but that doesn’t mean that your overall style has to be boring. Strawberries do better with jazzing things up on the bottom with cool pants and skirts instead.
Hourglass: You want to focus on sweaters that don’t have a ton of bulk, girl! Oversized sweaters or chunky sweaters can make you look like you put on weight, so chose pieces that work with your curvy figure instead.
Dress for your body type, mama: more tips I’ve learned over the years!
- First, don’t be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone in both life in general and with your closet.
- Try everything on first!
- Really, really pay attention to fit. Not just if you feel like something makes you look fat (and ahem, it could make you look fat because the fit is off). Look at where the seams are hitting your body.
- Just because something has a designer label, doesn’t always means that it’s the most well-made option.

I can’t stress enough how important it is to dress for your body type. You also need to understand that every trend and every cool piece of clothing you see hanging on mannequins in store windows isn’t going to work for your body type – and that’s okay. Knowledge is power and if you wear something else like a rockstar and feel like a million bucks, that’s what matters most. And one last note: keep in mind that even if you always dress for your body type, your body will change after having a baby and sometimes after every baby. And that’s okay, too!
XOXO,
Allison
