Pre-workout drinks are very popular in the health industry and I have never loved the ones I’ve bought – so I make my own! This pre-workout drink recipe provides a boost and hydration before you hit the weights!

Truth: I have mixed feelings about traditional pre-workouts that you find on store shelves. More often than not, they have a lot of crap in them that you really don’t want in your body. I also don’t like the overwhelming, tingly jittery feeling that they cause. I drink my coffee in the morning and as long as I drink my own super simple pre-workout with clean ingredients and electrolytes from Buoy – then I’m ready to take on my daily weight-lifting routine!

First, what exactly is a pre-workout and why are the ones on store shelves bad for you?
A pre-workout is a type of dietary supplement designed to boost energy, focus, and performance during exercise. It’s typically consumed 15-30 minutes before a workout to help improve strength, endurance, and overall workout intensity. They typically come in the form of powder, drinks, and pills.
These are claims, but we live in the real world and work with things that actually work and make an impact on our health.
They are generally not great for our bodies because they contain large amounts of caffeine and artificial ingredients, can cause overstimulation, and in many cases can harm your gut health. This is not something that you want to take on a daily basis. However, I have a delicious and safe alternative!

How to Make Your Own Pre-Workout
I choose to drink electrolytes from Buoy on a daily basis because they are flavorless, clean, focus on sustainability, and are faster absorbing because they are in liquid form. This is not the first time you have heard me talk about the includible health benefits of electrolytes from Buoy, please take a look at my most recent post, sharing how they helped me get through the holidays while still focusing on my health goals.

So, now onto the recipe!
What you need to make your own clean pre-workout:
- A short glass with 6oz of water in it
- One squeeze of Buoy energy drops
- Lemon juice – you choose how much!
Mix all ingredients and drink with a purpose (no leisurely sipping!) 15-30 minutes before you plan on working out for a boost in your step!
I say a short glass because for some reason it just makes it mentally easier to drink quickly (for me), but you can use any kind of glass of your choosing for this clean pre-workout recipe. I use the Buoy energy drops because they provide a clean-caffeine boost from green tea, l-theanine, electrolytes, and trace minerals to any drink. No sugar, sweeteners, flavors. Lastly, lemon juice has so many incredible benefits for our body as a whole (you can read them all here), but my major callouts are that it will help to keep you hydrated, give you more energy, and support physical performance.
I lift weights about 5 times per week, so I drink this on those mornings as soon as I get Blake on the bus. On days that I’m not working out, I fill my huge pink water bottle with the regular hydration drop electrolytes from Buoy. On days that I workout, I have that waterbottle with me as soon as I start lifting.
