The year 2020 brought on so many shifts for moms with the pandemic and I’ve watched post after post go viral about why hiring moms is so important – and I couldn’t agree more! How to Write a Stay at Home Mom Resume
On a personal note, with the kids getting older and knowing that Blake would be in pre-school 5.5 hours a day, 4 days per week that I made it my goal to start doing something outside of Project Motherhood, part-time. Why? Because I honestly love what I do for a living, I love to work, and I found myself yearing to be working with other people again.
Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE being self-employed, but I’m also a chatty Kathy and creative and wanted to start working back in digital marketing again witth other people. So I took some time to update my resume in the spring and started low-key searching for something. Over the beginning of summer I started interviewing and by the end of July I had accepted 2 different part-time job offers and I’m loving the newness and the challenge that these roles are bringing to my life.
So of course, being an over-shareer (yes, I know that’s not technically a word), I wanted to share all of that information with you all. Especially if you’ve been thinking about returning to the work force and googaling “how to write a stay at home mom resume” the search results can be pretty overwhelming. I want to simplify that for you guys today.
Step one: find a basic resume template online.
I’m a huge fan of using the free templates that Google Docs has to offer. There are so many to choose from and they all look incredibly professional. And did I mention they are free?
Step two: make a list of all the skills you have aquired while being a stay at home mom.
There are so many of them. Seriously, moms make the best emplyees because of their vast skillset. Whether you have worked in the corporate world before or not, being at home with children is not easy and teaches you so many skills that you can easily use in the workplace.
Just a few examples: you have stellar mutitasking skills, you are the ultimate negotiator, you can research, listen and organize like a pro, and your communication skills are unparallelled. Use these skills and new abilities in your resume to highlight what a badass employee you will be.
Step three: start compiling your content.
You are going to want to make sure you include all the basics like where you went to school and past employment, but make sure to add an objective and highlight any amazing skills and accomplishments you have. Make sure that everything you are adding adds value to your resume and don’t forget to include any volunteering from over the years!
Step four: don’t forget to address your gap in employment.
This is important and 100% necessary, especially if there is a large gap. We all know that most recruiters and companies looking to hire scan resumes through a system, so make sure you aren’t doing anything to create red flags. Without being cutesy (yup, no “head of household” or “official chaufeer” titles) add in all of those skills that you have aquired being a stay at home mom from step two and include them proudly. Don’t forget to include dates!
Step five: send those babies out!
There are so many places to start searching for positions such as Linkedin, Indeed, and Monster, but my favorite has been The Mom Project. It’s a great place where you can filter through both remote and in-person positions and people are specifically looking to hire moms. It’s the best!
