What a Low Sugar Diet Plan Actually Looks Like
Last week, after I published my blog post about why having a low sugar diet makes me a better mom, I had an outpour of questions about my low sugar diet plan. I think that it’s been so long since I’ve removed much of the sugar I was consuming regularly to be more strategic about my diet that I forgot how confusing it can be in the beginning. I was flooded with DMs and I’m so excited that so many of you are ready to make these big changes! I can’t recommend more, first buying a box (or 5!) of Sweet Defeat because cutting out sugar is really, really, really hard and everyone can use a little helper to lessen the blow.
First and foremost, I’m not a doctor or a nutritionist, I’m just sharing what has worked for me in the most practical ways possible. My diet isn’t perfect and yes, it still does include some sugar in it, but compared to what was creeping in before through stuff like Ketchup, salad dressing, ice cream, dried fruits, etc – there have been HUGE changes.
My low sugar diet plan
I tend to be a creature of habit with food and will eat the same things every day, except for dinner so that I know I’m sticking with a low sugar diet plan and that may not work for you. However, I’m giving a few variations below, too, just so you know where I might substitute things in, when my sugar cravings come on and when throughout the day I am typically popping my Sweet Defeat.
My goal is to make this as uncomplicated as possible – I know you’re busy, mama!
And I also want to add that many of you know I’m big on the Keto Diet, which I’m not on right now, just living a low carb, low sugar lifestyle at the moment. But, there are a lot of things I’ve learned from Keto that I still practice (which if you don’t know, on Keto you are allowed ZERO grams of sugar per day), that help keep me on track. I’ll explain further below.
AND ALSO: This low sugar diet plan I follow below comes AFTER you have already detoxed your body from tons of added refined sugars. Not sure what steps to take there? I have a full 7-day guide with Sweet Defeat for you to read FIRST!.
Breakfast – as soon as I wake up
- 2 large cups of coffee
- 1 packet of Truvia per cup
- 1 tbsp heavy cream per cup
- sprinkle of cinnamon
I intermittent fast about 6 days a week, which means that you eat only during certain hours every day. I aim for 12pm-8pm as best as I can. This is why I barely eat anything for breakfast each day. I choose heavy cream for my coffee (this is a keto thing) because the fat in it usually keeps me full for close to 1 pm each day, but it has zero grams of sugar. If stevia is a trigger for you to want more sugar than omit this completely and just use the cinnamon in your coffee.
Lunch – 12:30/1pm
- Salad with 2 pieces of turkey bacon, fresh spinach, back olives, red onion, cucumber, tomato
- Dressing: a squeeze of fresh lemon, 1 tbsp olive oil
I eat pretty much the same salad every (I know: borrring). But this salad is great and I used to also sprinkle on cheese, but I’ve been trying to cut back dairy, too. I also sometimes meal prep and do grilled chicken for the week with fresh veggies as an alternate. Salad dressings is where you really need to watch out for with hidden sugar, so I mostly opt to just make my own.
Snack -2:30/3pm
- fresh berries
- sprinkle of no sugar added dried cherries
- Sweet Defeat!
After lunchtime is where my Sweet Defeat comes into my low sugar diet plan as this is where my sugar cravings come almost every single day. Like I mentioned, creature of habit over here, so I always keep fresh berries and no sugar added dried organic cherries (you MUST make sure they are no sugar added or else they are like eating gummie bears!) on hand. I allow myself this snack mid-day, but make sure that I have my trusted Sweet Defeat afterward so that I don’t start scouring the house looking for chocolate.
Dinner – 6pm
Dinner changes up every night and I try not to be too restrictive with what I eat since I’m pretty strict during the day. I will say that this is the easiest time of day for me with my low sugar diet plan because I want salty versus savory eats. If we are having something like pasta for dinner, I will opt to buy no sugar added sauce and throw it over zoodles. Sugar really is hidden in so many things so you have to watch the condiments (sour cream, steak sauce, ketchup, ranch dressing, etc) and I never make recipes that have any added sugar either. You just have to be smart about your low sugar diet plan and read all the labels. Here’s my sample dinner that I’m making this evening:
- Fresh, broiled salmon with garlic, dill, salt, and pepper (I only buy this on sale and directly from the seafood counter at the grocery store)
- Homemade macaroni and cheese (I haven’t made this since Thanksgiving, so everyone is excited. The only sugar is 1 gram per serving that comes from the half and half)
- Boiled cauliflower with Kerrygold butter, salt, and pepper
Dessert – 8pm
This greatly varies night to night, but being a food lover, I have to have something to look forward to eating at the end of the day, after the kids are in bed, whenever I’m having a moment to myself. I will allow myself something like Halo Top ice cream in the evening but am very contentious of the serving size. Fresh fruit is also a great option, too, as they are filled with natural sugars versus refined. If I feel an intense sugar craving coming on at this point in my day, I will pop another Sweet Defeat, however, my most intense craving really is during that 3 pm slump!
