Writing has always been my thing. What started out as telling funny stories about dogs through poetry in elementary school (I bet my mom still has them all saved somewhere) has turned into my career and a way for me to connect with the world around me.
I capture memories this way. I share this way. I connect this way. It’s what I know.
I journaled a lot in high school and started blogging whenever we moved back to the city after being away in Virginia for Chris’s active duty contract, but what happened in between was nothing short of magical.
One of the gifts I received before our sweet Branden was born (at the baby shower), was from my Aunt Lorraine who has always played such a special part in my life and is my Godmother, too. She got me a motherhood journal, one with inspiring quotes at the tops of each blank page. When I opened it, it was definitely something that I knew I needed, probably just as much as the stroller and car-seat. (Thanks Aunt Lorraine!)
I brought it out from the bookshelf again, right around the time that we found out that we were expecting 20 weeks ago, dusted it off and made a promise to fill the pages and write letters, musing, stories – whatever it was that inspired me to share with both Branden and the new baby someday. We go through the highest highs and the lowest lows sometimes in motherhood and struggle to have a constant in between. I want them to know how much they are always on my mind and how much I give of myself for their health and happiness.
My #motherspromise is to always be there for them. As trite as that may sound, there is nothing more important than those people in your life that you can truly count on – day or night – to be a sounding board, a shoulder to cry on, a fixer of boo-boos, and the person who wipes away all the tears. I want my kids to know they can always come to me no matter what, for no matter what.
Looking back, I have to say that my parents were pretty good about this and I always had a great friendship with my parents where I wasn’t ever nervous to come to them with questions and we try to do the same with Branden. Our walks home from the bus stop often include conversations about the words that he heard from older kids on the bus that he doesn’t know the definitions to or something at school that he didn’t understand, and I secretly squeal with glee inside know that he had no embarrassment coming to me first.
Though I know that it won’t always be that way whenever the teenage years hit, but he will come back to me at some point and my door will always be open.
Being able to rely on people and products is everything to me. As we prepare for this new little one, we are relying on Pampers to get us through. (The best deals can be found at Walmart, and they offer free shipping on order of $50 if you want to stock up!) When faced with the diaper aisle, there is way too much to choose from and Pampers stands out for so many reasons. The quality is simply unparalleled, as they feel as soft as cloth diaper, but way less of a mess! We love how they are hypoallergenic, because you never know how sensitive your baby’s bottom will be (especially if you are like me and stocking up ahead of time). You can count on their wetness indicator and how well they adsorb to keep your baby dry as long as possible. I can’t recommend them enough for new mamas!
So that is my #motherspromise, what’s yours? I would love to hear in the comments below or share with me on Facebook!
Fashionably yours,
Allison

My Mom is the one person that has always been there for me. Throughout my whole life whether she agreed with me or not, she always stood by me as best she could.
