Play Dough Recipe for Kids: Aromatherapy Calm Down Dough
Okay you guys, I have to first point out that this play dough recipe for kids transcends well beyond just a play toy that we use these days. Using play dough is incredibly calming, keeps kids engaged and being a part of creating it from scratch fills them with so much confidence. Since Branden’s ADHD diagnoses, we have sought out different ways to help him through challenging moments and this play dough recipe for kids has been a winner – plus Blake can get involved, too.
I’ve never been a fan of buying play dough from the store and will always, always prefer making my own toxic-free version (especially whenever it takes only 10 minutes to make) and skip out on using dye. For Branden, having something to do with his hands helps to keep him calm, but my secret sauce with this play dough recipe for kids is that we add calming essential oils to it and with every squeeze, they are released into the air. Not only does it smell amazing, but this aromatherapy calm down dough really does the trick to help Branden work through outbursts.

Just like any play dough, it will eventually dry out, but the zip lock bag will help prolong its life. I hope that your kids enjoy my spin on classic play dough and benefits from the aromatherapy aspect. I always keep lavender oil handy and it’s just a part of our everyday life, but there are other oils such as chamomile, ylang ylang, jasmine and sandalwood that are very calming, too. You can even blend a few together that you love – just don’t add too much to the dough!
XOXO,
Allison
