I started my clean beauty journey about three years ago and honestly haven’t looked back. Don’t worry, I’m not going to encourage you to dump all of your beauty favorites in the trash and start from scratch. I did this slowly over time and will be sharing how to do that in a blog post later on. If you are ready to start your own clean beauty journey now read on for the full scoop. If you just can’t wait to read my blog post about transitioning to clean beauty, my main takeaway will be this: start with the products that you are using to wash your body and things that are meant to stay on your skin all day (i.e. foundation, sunscreen and moisturizers). After that, start swapping out all of your makeup.
Why should you be choosing clean beauty always? It’s very simple: beauty should be good for you.
Studies have shown that serious health issues (including but not limited to asthma, cancer, and infertility) are on the rise and are due in some part to our ongoing exposure to toxic chemicals. Now, our exposure to these chemicals can happen just as easily while we’re grabbing coffee at Starbucks as in the shower, but the data backing up whats happening because of unregulated beauty products on the market is staggering.
There are more than 80,000 chemicals on the market today. Many don’t have any safety data, especially in the skin care and beauty industry. Taking things a step further, the Food and Drug Administration (the agency that regulates cosmetics in the United States) does not have the authority to remove harmful ingredients from the products we put on our bodies and on our kids’ bodies every single day, day after day. And they also haven’t made a change to the product labeling laws since 1938.
Digest that.

Sharing this information has become a passion project of mine over the years and I was recently introduced to a company called Beautycounter by my friend Shelley from Clean Green Being. (Follow her here!)
I took the plunge and decided to come on board as a consultant because this is a mission that I am 100% behind. I am going to advocate for a cleaner future and stand by this company as we fight for stricter guidelines and regulations to shift the personal-care industry away from using harmful and questionable ingredients. I want responsible souring + much more transparency when it comes to labeling.
So what is clean beauty?
Clean beauty means that you are buying products that are not just good for your skin, but great for your skin because they are free of harmful chemicals. At Beautycounter, we have 1,500 chemicals banned from our products and are very transparent about it by publishing them on The Never List™. This includes the over 1,400 chemicals banned or restricted in personal care products by the European Union, plus additional chemicals screened by Beautycounter and found to be of concern.

And of course, here’s what clean beauty isn’t:
- expensive
- dull
- non-pigmented
- boring
- products that don’t work
The list could go on and on, but I won’t bore you. Our clean beauty products are anything but ordinary and have been featured in Vogue, Allure and many, many more. They are celebrity cult favorites and we have products for men (and Branden uses the line, too!) and babies, too!

I truly hope that this post helped you learn a little bit more about clean beauty and that you are ready to join the clean beauty movement with me! It’s very unfortunate that the government isn’t doing much to regulate beauty products, so now is really the time to stand up and advocate for ourselves – starting with making smarter choices for the whole family.
And again, feel free to join my clean beauty facebook group here and shop clean beauty with me here at Beautycounter.
