How to Protect Your Social Media Privacy (Even If You Post Pictures Of Your Kids Online)
RELATED: Is Social Media Changing Our Motherhood Experience?
Being an influencer has often filled me with a lot of concern whenever it comes to both our social media privacy and Internet privacy as a whole. I post SO many pictures of our children and I love doing that. There’s nothing like scrolling and having these memories right at our fingertips, but also having the ability to share them in an instant with family that doesn’t live close to us. It’s a win/win situation in my eyes. However, because our kids are involved we have to be really cautious about what we’re posting and when.
Years ago, I attended a luncheon at the iconic NYC Tavern on the Green that was sponsored by Life Lock and they shared a few tips for practicing safety online so that no one can steal your identity or harm you in any way and I’ve also learned a few things over the years to share. With Halloween just passing and so many holidays ahead, I wanted to compile these tips to help keep you all safe during this holiday season and beyond!
How to always have social media privacy
Internet privacy and social media privacy truly go hand and hand and if you stick with these practical tips, your whole family will be safe – and you can still share all you want!
Make sure you have your internet privacy settings set
I know this might sound annoying, but these are there for a reason and we need to pay attention to them. You must go through all of your internet privacy settings for each social media network that you belong to and make sure you have it set to something you are comfortable with. And to make it all even more annoying, you need to go back every few months and re-check them because sometimes things shift whenever updates happen and you just have to make sure these internet privacy setting stay consistent.
Never geotag your location until you have left
This is a HUGE one! I know we all get excited whenever you have the cutest picture with Santa or at the pumpkin patch and you want to post it right now…..but don’t. I say this with love, because you never, ever know what kind of crazies are out there watching you (I know, that thought is enough to send a chill down your spine, but it’s true.)
First, what is geotagging?
If you don’t know, geotagging is just the fancy name for whenever you tag your location on a social media site. To rattle your brain even more, if you let your phone reveal your location, sites like Facebook and Twitter will automatically share where you’re posting from even if you aren’t including a photo or tagging a specific location.
So, my suggestion is to always leave where you are tagging first and then post the picture sharing where you were earlier that day. It’s always better to be safe than sorry.
Make sure you never share where your child goes to school
This was a difficult one for me whenever we lived in the city and Branden attended a charter school that had a very strict uniform that had the school name branded on everything. So even if we weren’t actually at the school and he was wearing school clothes, I had to make sure to put a black dot over top his logo in the pictures. Never reveal where your kiddos are going to school every day!
Be extra careful when posting about major milestones
This was a HUGE takeaway that I learned from at that lunch a long time ago. People who are trying to find out information about who you are, where you love or even steal your identity will be looking for you to post about big milestones in your life (i.e. having a new baby, buying a new home, moving, etc). Why? Because during these busy and stressful times in your life, you’re less likely to be watching your bank account like a hawk and people can spend your money often without you even noticing. How can you overcome this? Just be extra, extra cautious during these times. Keep an eye on your bank account and credit cards and don’t overshare too much.
