A Spring Cleaning Checklist (For Moms Who Hate to Clean)
A few weeks ago, my mom visited us here in NYC while Chris was away and Branden was on spring break. I scrambled a little bit, I’ll admit, to do some major spring cleaning before she got here because I’m not the greatest housekeeper and let things pile up. I got a lot done the weekend before she arrived, but I’m just not the mom who loves to clean and found myself blurting out “I’m sorry, I just don’t like cleaning,” when she got here. I really do try to live my life by one key thing she taught me though, which was to do one thing every day, whether it was vacuuming or dusting, in addition to my normal daily cleaning routine (dishes, high chair tray, taking out the trash, etc) and it’s helped keep me on track day to day. But unfortunately, it’s not enough and that’s where Bon Ami comes in.
The spring cleaning products you want on your radar
We live in pretty close quarters in a tiny New York City apartment and we have a toddler whose quite literally touching everything, so I opt for Bon Ami which is a powder cleaner that is extremely powerful, but also a nontoxic cleanser that I feel good about having in my home. And being as green as I can be, it’s important to note that it’s also biodegradable, too. Perfection in my eyes.
I’m not going to lie: Bon Ami has a little bit of a nostalgic thing going on with me, too, as we always had it on hand in the bathroom growing up to wipe down the bathtub before we got in. But now, having my own home, I’m learning that it really can be used in so many other places in the home, too. All you need is to have a damp sponge handy (I mean…hello…I’m a mom which means I pretty much walk through life with a damp sponge in my hand.) and a little bit of water to turn the powder into a thick paste and whatever you’re cleaning wipes clean. Another bonus is that because it’s nontoxic, this also means no harsh chemicals when you’re cleaning, which I love.
My spring cleaning 101
To me, spring cleaning basically stands for one thing: deep cleaning, right? It’s time to really purge and get all those hard to reach places that you avoid during the year. We try to “spring clean” a couple times of year actually because of the small space we live in and it’s completely necessary to keep me sane. My biggest takeaway is to do it over a period of two weekends so that you don’t get burnt out and have a plan. Below is how I break it all down and tackle all areas of our home.
My helpful spring cleaning checklist
Ok friends, it’s time to spring clean! Here’s the order I do everything in:
Start with the big stuff.
We always start with the clutter, which is the big stuff to us. These are the things that we need to get rid of and completely purge from our lives. We go through closets, the toy box, and drawers and make two big piles in the hallway. One pile goes to the trash and the other goes to Goodwill. Purging feels so good.
Go room by room.
After we are rid of all unnecessary items that have just been taking up space, we break everything down room by room. We then organize, dust, sweep, mop and most importantly – move furniture and book and nick nacks so that we don’t miss any spots.
Get the whole family involved.
This might be the most important part of the whole spring cleaning experience for us, getting everyone involved. It’s important to us that our kids know that it’s not just moms job to keep our home clean and that everyone needs to pitch in, too. Everyone has a role to place in our spring cleaning checklist no matter how big or small.

What are your spring cleaning goals this year or what are you trying to check off your spring cleaning checklist (I know many families work on a new project each spring and I would love to hear about it!)? No matter how you and your family tackle spring cleaning, I can’t recommend making sure that Bon Ami is part of your cleaning bucket to get the job done in a nontoxic way!

It’s getting to be that time of year again! If only I had known years ago to go room by room, I wouldn’t have dreaded spring cleaning!

I’m a firm believer in getting the big things done first. It makes the smaller tasks much easier to accomplish. I’ll have to pick up some Bon Ami cleanser for our shower, because it could definitely use a thorough once-over!

This is a good guide. We’ll be able to keep everything clean if my family works together. The clutter really builds up when we’re not careful.

At one point, I used to do spring cleaning all on my own. But now, I go about it with all of the family members (much like you suggested). It makes it a lot less stressful.

I love Bon Ami. It’s what my grandma used to use and I’ve used it in my home ever since. It just does such a great job and makes such easy work of things.

This is a checklist that I need. I am not a fan of cleaning. We are hoping to purge a lot of things out of our home before we move this summer.
