Learning to navigate the keto flu should be the first thing every mama learns before starting the keto diet. Here’s my tips to make it an easy experience!
This is a sponsored post. Thanks for supporting Project Motherhood!
I’m going to be honest with you all: no one told me about the keto flu whenever I first started the keto diet, which now seems like a million years ago. I started this lifestyle about 6 months after Blake was born and was so lost in the beginning. I finally got the hang of keto and then the days that followed left me feeling pretty darn out of it. I had no clue that there was a name for what my body was going through or why I was basically feeling like I was having morning sickness. I think I even recall taking a pregnancy test I was so confused.
I’m not going to let you go through all of that! I’m so excited to share all my tips for getting through the keto flu with ease – became mamas can’t be down and out for days at a time.

What is the keto flu?
In the simplest terms, the keto flu is your body’s reaction to getting rid of all the crap we eat on a daily basis. It’s a real thing and has actually been written about in Harvard Health Publishing where they say the, “keto flu is a group of symptoms that may appear two to seven days after starting a ketogenic diet. Headache, foggy brain, fatigue, irritability, nausea, difficulty sleeping, and constipation.” You basically go through a detox where you are letting all of the excess carbs and sugars leave your body so that you can start fueling yourself with very low carb and high fat foods.
Not everyone goes through the keto flu. It’s just one of those things where some people might be down and out for days, while others might not even feel it.
What are symptoms of the keto flu?
The keto flu gets its name from the actual flu because the detox process actually mimics feeling sick with the flu. You can feel feverish (but you won’t actually get a fever), chills, headaches, dizzyness, and nausea are all possabile symptons that you can feel for anywhere from 3 days to weeks after starting the keto diet. Once you get through it, though, it’s smooth sailing because you won’t have to feel those keto flu symptoms again unless you come back out of ketosis.
The fact that this happens at all is a true testament to how much icky stuff we put into our bodies on a regular basis whenever we eat highly processed foods as part of our regular diet. So, I’m sending some serious fist bumps to you mama for making the choice to power through and start a while new lifestyle!
The On The Go Moms Guide to Surviving the Keto Flu
So you’re ready to beat the keto flu? Let’s go!
First, I know that you don’t have time to be feeling any of those nasty keto flu symptoms. You’re busy, I’m busy – we have a lot going on as moms. These are my simple hacks for navigating these symptoms without stressing about it.
Hydrate. Hydrate. Hydrate.
This is pretty much the only thing that you should be doing every single day to get through the keto flu. Nothing else really helps. I know it’s not always easy to chug 100oz of water each day, so for those days whenever you need extra electroytes, theres KetoChow. Not only does this amazing brand have incredible tasting meal replacement shakes, but they offer a variety of drops to help get you through the keto flu that won’t add calories, carbs or sugar to your day.
First, they offer elecrolyte drops that I think are the best on the market. I’ve been using them for a little over a month and they make such a big difference in my day. They give you a boost of Sodium, Magnesium, Potassium, and Chloride – minus the calories and sugar that most other brands have.
But the amazingness doesn’t end there.
They also offer fasting drops, which are a new formulation that is specifically designed for people who are fasting along with keto. They have higher levels of sodium and less potassium so that kidney patients can use them.
Lastly, their magnesium drops are awesome to have handy as this is one of the hardest of the elecroltyes to get and aborb. Their forumla allows for easy absorbtions and ultimate hydration.
My last tip: just sticking with your keto lifestyle change will help, too. I don’t want you to start feeling the keto flu and immediately stop because you think that something is wrong. This is just your body’s way of adjusting. Keep pushing forward and before you know it, your fatigue will turn into extreme energy and weight loss and you will be so happy you stuck with it!
